Need help

Hey beautiful mothers my baby is 5 months old and doctor said to introduce him to water and baby foods. I am very nervous about how to start him on water and foods? Idk what foods to start him on or how to even introduce him to water. It gives me anxiety and I get overwhelmed on how to start. Any tips and suggestions on how to start would be very helpful.

Call the pediatrician and specifically tell them to give you a list of “foods that I should start” and how can I introduce water at this age. I’m surprised that didn’t provide any guidance. ——- how to introduce water is really your preference. I taught my kids with an open cup because I loathe sippy cups (which is another option) . But you might find them to be best for your family. You could also get a silicone straw cup. This way your child learns to hold a cup, use a straw, tip the cup back and eventually drink from it without a straw and a lid. I personally started off with small amounts but wouldn’t exceed 4oz a day as water intoxication is real and dangerous. And at this age they still get hydrated from boob or bottle. Remember, water introduction is not replaying boob or bottle. As for food this is also a preference: You could buy premade baby food. You could purée/ blend your own food combination at home. You could do baby led weaning. Or bit of everything

Veggies I got told to start with then introduce fruits. I started with my little one at 17 weeks. I also used a straw cup she will also drink from a cup and bottles (drink not baby). Babies up to a year old do not need more than 4oz of water but they need some water to help them digest food and make sure they don’t get constipated. I would start with maybe soft broccoli or carrot sticks and let your baby just feel squash it and let him put it in his mouth.

Water should just be little sips from an open cup or straw cup. Before 6 months just single ingredient vegetable purees Or baby porridge made with formula or bm

Check out the solid starts website. It’s really useful in terms of foods, how to introduce high allergen foods, choking/gagging, pictured of how to cut/prepare and even basic recipes. Water you can introduce however you like but should still be sterilised water

I introduce veggies first. Give a bite wait 10-15 min to check for signs of allergy and continue on until little one refuses to open mouth (a good indicator of all done) also teach the all done sign, milk, eat and more. It helps them express what they want leading to fewer tantrums later. Go slow. Stick with the same food of 3 days, I did purees once a day. Then you can add more foods and as they prefer to eat more instead of drink you can slow down the bottles. I love the straw sippies, they definitely let you teach them to drink from a straw. I added apple sauce to the straw and that’s how my oldest (now 13 months) was able to learn to drink from a straw cup. 1oz of water should be good at 5-6 months. Just go slow, follow your babies lead. You got this mama. Once babe looses the tongue thrust reflex, I’d go ahead and try some finger foods (around 6 months)

Just to add allergies can happen anytime not just after 10-15 mins my baby has had strawberries more then 20 times then one day just gave her strawberries again same brand as always on its own again she reacted to it so allergies don’t just happen straight away.

@Paige that is true, that why the advice I was given was stay with the same food in the beginning for 3 days. Each case is different. My oldest had a milk protein sensitivity as a newborn and until 10 months when she was back to not having the sensitivity. It is case by case. Like I never used to be allergic to coconut as a kid and now as an adult if I eat coconut (real or artificial) I swell up like a balloon and go into anaphylactic shock. Allergies are crazy things

They certainly are. My little one also has CMPA.
