I would say that independent schools do ‘typically’ formalise learning faster than other LA/public/academies etc. But there’s absolutely some that don’t, and maintain a learning through play pedagogy for longer.
This is NOT normal by my standards in state schools However independent schools do have a much higher focus on academic success Big advocate of play based learning and also a big advocate of it being done right across KS1!
I would expect it to be the other way round in reception and would also expect the 'desk learning' to be on the carpet in small groups most of that time
Thank you so much everyone! It was actually my husband that asked and now he said he can’t remember if it was 60/40 the other way round 😂🤦♀️ I’m going to clarify with them. They did mention that the children are usually at different stages in their learning. We actually had him signed up at another school and I’m starting to question whether that would have been a better fit. When we looked at schools I kept reminding myself that he would be very different by 4 but now we are coming closer to that age I’m concerned. He’s not used to a structured environment and is very much a “free spirit” 🤣 It’s not helped by the fact that we have very poor schools in our area so there is very little choice. We will have to drive 35 minutes just to get to this school xx
Even 40/60 is still a lot of adult directed time at a table, especially for newly 4yos and even more so if that’s the expectation on every child and from the very beginning. They’d probably have to strap my son down for that to work 😂😂😂
I looked round all different types of schools for my eldest and they varied on this a lot. One of the private schools was VERY desk-y wouldn’t pick it for my kids but it was a good fit for a friends kid
