How long does it take your teething baby to finish a bottle?

My baby was always a slow eater (took him about 45 minutes to take 5 oz, whether by breast or by bottle), but now that he is probably teething, he takes about 4 hours to take a 5-6 oz bottle. Obviously we need to start seeing our lactation consultant again, but is anyone else experiencing this?

Are you sure it’s not the nipple size? I had to switch nipples. I can never tell if she is teething but I did think it switching nipples helped. She wasn’t as frustrated

Have you tried up sizing the nipple? If he's taking 4-5 hours per bottle is he just constantly eating? With that math I don't see how he would be getting his full amount of Oz per day unless he ate practically all the time, that must be so difficult for you! I would definitely recommend a lactation consultant, there's definitely something going on!

He is basically constantly eating from 6 AM to midnight, save for when I am pumping. It’s definitely not sustainable. This has only been going on for about a week now, but we have avoided sizing up nipples because our lactation consultant advised us that when you size up, babies are more likely to stop taking the breast/prefer the bottle to the breast. I really want him to be able to keep breast feeding too.

Of course the most important thing is that he gets fed, whether that’s through my nipple or a bottle. Right now he breastfeeds every morning, I’d hate for us to lose that

What size nipple is he using? My son is 5 months and uses a size 3 and has no issue going from bottle to breast. I've always been told by lactation consultants (that as long as a good latch is already established that nipple confusion is pretty much a myth.

He uses an M in pigeon nipples

Could it be just a growth spurt?

Yeah you definitely need a faster flow nipple. But M should be normal. Have you had him checked for lip/tongue ties before? At this age and even before, it should only take 10-15 min max to finish a bottle

He had a frenectomy to release both his tongue and lip tie at 6 weeks. It improved breastfeeding tremendously. He went from consuming less than an oz at the breast to up to 5 oz. But now it’s like we are back to square one. And we kept up with the stretches and oral training for an additional month after the doctors recommendation

Literally double what it used to be

@Asha I would have it reassessed just in case it reconnected or something. They can be tricky. The lac consultant might be able to help reassess!

@Francy thanks for the rec, but both still have that nice diamond shape. My dad has been a dentist for over 35 years and when I mentioned our recent challenges he took a look and said they still look great
