The NIPT test is an additional blood test that takes longer to get results from than the standard screening, but is offered if you have initial results (at the 12 week scan/blood test) that show a high risk indicator, or if you have a higher risk of the three chromosomes they test for at the outset. (It only tests for T18, T13, T21). E.g. I’ve had a previous pregnancy that had a T18 diagnosis so in this pregnancy I was offered the NIPT test at my 12 week scan, even though the scan itself went OK and there appeared to be no issues. I still had an adjusted risk score that was quite high though (due to factors of age, previous pregnancy and low PAPP-A). Some hospitals are looking at introducing it as standard though, if this is what you’re being offered? Or perhaps you’re paying for a private test? But to answer your question, it will just be an additional vial of blood that gets sent away for testing.
I’ve booked it privately, thanks both ☺️
Just your dating scan. They will measure the fold at the back of the babies neck to make sure it’s not too thick. Then you’ll just have a blood test. My results came back within 48 hours and you’re either get a high or low result. If it comes back high I think they offer more tests. My was low so I’m not 100% sure what happens if it’s high risk. Good luck 🤞🏽
