Baby not enjoying food

Hello! FTM here and baby is 6.5 months old. I started weaning a couple of weeks before baby turned 6 months, and he hated it. He gagged and spat up the food. I started with cucumber, carrot and sweet potato which I had boiled and mashed with a fork. I gave baby a day in between and the last week or so, I’ve been giving him purées only as it seems it’s the only thing he eats. It’s mostly veg so far. But I’m seeing online other babies at the same age being able to eat solids and a variety of foods, that I’m concerned I messed up. Any advice or resources that you have found helpful and could share please? Thank you!

Comparison is the thief of joy, try not to look too much at what other babies are doing. Every baby is different. If he only likes purées then keep going with the purées. Once he is used to them, try a chunkier puree and build it up. You could always offer the solid version of the puree you’re giving him alongside it. So if he’s having carrot puree, put a carrot (prepped correctly) on the high chair table and see if he does anything with it. Dont force it on him but see if he starts to explore the food and play with it a bit. He’ll get there, it’s still early days and it’s brand new to him so it takes some getting used to when they’ve never experienced food before x

Exactly what Evie said! We started with purees at 6m, all the veg (one at a time) and slowly built up to mashed and chunky mixed vegs with some BLW too. Once he was confident with textures in his mouth, learning to chew and swallow we moved on to BLW. Not fully BLW yet, he's 9m now but he absolutely loves his food and tries anything and everything. The main thing to remember is to keep it fun, no pressure, give him spoons to play with, let him get messy and just enjoy it. 'Food before 1 is just for fun' as their main source of nutrition is milk. You could try things like the Ella's melty sticks to practice biting and chewing just as a snack. He will get there eventually it's still very early days! Well done mama you got thisxx

Try not to compare! My first would demolish anything we put in front of him, but my second gagged and threw up almost every meal no matter what I gave her. And I did exactly the same for both! With my second, I kept trying once a week but stopped putting pressure on myself after the first month of weaning. She eventually got the hang of solid food around 10 months. But I didn't really ever try using purees. I think as the others have said just try and have fun with it and just don't expect him to eat anything but just see what he tries. It's all a new experience for them and they each experience it differently. He will get there in his own time. You are doing such a good job!

Most babies don’t like food when starting out or have no interest. My baby hated food especially oatmeal and rice cereal and would cry during meals. But now she’s a good eater. Just give it time. First she was spoon fed purées then didn’t like them anymore. Then I gave her food in the high chair and she would eat it. Sometimes she doesn’t like to sit in the high chair so I give her teething crackers or puffs or fruit and she enjoys mealtime. Also some babies are teething and don’t want to eat. But starting out my baby didn’t want to eat ( 6 months.) At 7 months she didn’t want to eat because of teething. Now half of her teeth are out at 8 months and she’s enjoying eating However she hates purées. She also like being hand fed or blw instead of purée. Some babies just don’t like being spoon fed too

I’d say it’s pretty normal. A lot of babies take a long while to ‘like’ food or eat anything more than a spoonful.

I try my best not to compare. My 10 month old only eats purée, every time I ever try to give her anything she gags and chokes so it scares me. I wouldn’t worry too much on it, try more solids when you feel more comfortable. I’ve been trying to figure out what I can give her that won’t make her gag.
