Personally I LOVE Russell, it’s my top pick if I were to ever have a boy. I wouldn’t let the association put you off. It’s not something people will think about or remember at all before long, so just use the name you love if you want to. I think it’s pretty hard to find a name that doesn’t have some sort of association with someone else after all.

Russell is a great name! Don’t let one awful person with that name put you off. He isn’t going to be someone we hear of in a year or two (whenever the trial is over), but you’re going to have your son for the rest of his life. His name matters, Russel brand doesn’t!
i like Russet with Rusty as a nickname, always thought it worked well because Russet is a reddish/brown colour - so it also fits with that nature kinda vibe and the soft sounding rustle of leaves etc - plus both Red and Russ would also work as nicknames - so similar to Russell too, but removes the association with Russell Brand - it's so frustrating when you love a name but then it is tarnished by association, but given how recent all. the allegations etc are, I get that you are having second thoughts about going with Russell.
maybe Russet James instead of Russell? that way, the nicknames you like would all still work and it still has the nature/colour connection.
