Was the GP NHS? X
Yes GP was NHS I’ve rang HR just waiting on them to get back to me I’m praying they’ve got it wrong I honestly don’t know how I can pay my bills Super annoyed too how they’ve contacted me about this after my mat leave has started (for context I put my application in as soon as I turned 20 weeks and had numerous meetings which them for breakdown examples etc) not once was this mentioned Thank you for the information x
@Gemma can I ask Gemma do you work for NHS? And if so does GP (nhs practice) class as continuing service? Thanks x
GP practices are classed as independent contractors (that provides NHS services) and most of them have own pay structure. That’s possibly why you don’t qualify for occupational Mat leave? I’d speak to your HR to clarify this.
@Elaine as far as I’m aware it’s still continuous nhs service so I would qualify for some mat leave (Eg pay NHS pensions etc) Just waiting on them to get back to me
🤞 I’ve just had a look at the NHS handbook - you can argue that GP is paid by ICB which is a NHS employer therefore is reckonable service. Good luck x
They told me the same but i questioned it and they were wrong. I’m sure your entitled if the gp practice was nhs and you had an nhs pension etc
@Kate hi no, I’m independent, it’s all depends on if you have continuous service with the NHS some practices are not NHS 😭
@Georgina I hope you’re right! My practice was nhs so I’m praying it counts otherwise I’m screwed! Just can’t believe they haven’t said until after I started mat leave
@Georgina may I ask was anything different with your situation? X
I work at an NHS GP practice and this is the information I looked up and clarified with my practice: From govt website : “Statutory Maternity Pay (SMP) To qualify for SMP you must: earn on average at least £123 a week give the correct notice and proof you’re pregnant have worked for your employer continuously for at least 26 weeks continuing into the ‘qualifying week’ - the 15th week before the expected week of childbirth” From nhsemployers.org “To qualify for OMP the employee must have had 12-months continuous service with one or more NHS employers (in the case of GP trainees this includes GP practices) by the start of the 11th week before their EWC, and be employed by the NHS at that point” Are you registered with a trade union? Might be a good idea to get some advice and backing from them too.
@Faith thank you yes I’m with RCN I will contact them for more information X
@Kate I work in a hospital but if your gp is nhs then you’ll be fine. I contacted employee relations and they sent me the policy on parental leave. Can you ask for that? Hopefully it’ll all work out soon for you!
@Georgina thanks for the info! I now work in a hospital so I’m hoping it works out!

@Kate let us know ow how it goes! I’d definitely call them back if you don’t hear anything this morning. And regardless of outcome please raise a complaint that this was only raised after you took mat leave despite numerous opportunities previously
@Naomi thank you, I will do. I will, the stress this has caused is ridiculous 😢 how can it not when it’s a matter of having a wage or not!
@Naomi the stress I’ve had but happy to say it was an error and I am entitled to OMP, thank god I questioned it! Thank you everyone for your help, I can relax a bit now 😂
Amazing @Kate so happy for you what a weight to be lifted!
I’m a HR consultant, I would call them and ask why and ask for the policy asap 😭☺️
