Homeschool mama's in Florida

What conservative programs are you all using to homeschool? I see soooo many options in Florida for online programs. Trying to narrow it down. Loving ACE at this point and is by far my favorite. But, I definitely need a little organization in which ever program I select. In other words, I'd like a more guided and organized program to keep me on track with what to teach my child. Also, I'd love to meet more Florida moms who are on the same boat! Feel free to reach out :)

I’m not homeschooling yet since my first turns 4 this summer but I plan to use Abeka book. They also have their academy online video school if that’s what you are looking for.

I was homeschooled myself and used ACE. Graduated from their homeschool academy and got to walk graduation at their home base in Nashville. I loved ACE! I'd highly recommend their academy when you get to high school level with your kids because they make a transcript for you from "Lighthouse Christian School" so apply to colleges was very easy.

@Rebecca are you planning to sort of free style with Abeka or do the academy?

@Grace Would you suggest doing it without the academy in the beginning? I couldn't decide which route to take. Go through the academy or just purchase the self guided route. Also, how flexible are they with learning? For example, if my child is having issues with a certain subject I'd like to spend more time teaching her that than rushing her. Are they ok with that?

@Nicole personally, I don't see the purpose in spending money on the academy until high school. Maybe middle school if you wanted, but transcripts for college only have to be high school, so that's where it matters. If I'm remembering correctly, there's no deadlines with the academy. I think you declare your start and end date to the school year, so if you need to take something slow, absolutely do it at your own pace! In high school it might start mattering just because they have to define the 4 years for transcript purposes, but younger than that, no, do what you have to do!!!

@Nicole for preschool and probably kindergarten I’ll do it free style. If I like it that way I may just continue it. We used abeka for my homeschool curriculum growing up and did it that way and it seemed a lot easier. My parents could pick and choose what assignments we had instead of us having to do everything that they have scheduled in the lesson plans. It was a lot more flexible.

@Grace So, once you completed a certain grade level how did your state require your evaluations (if free styling). I believe the state of Florida requires an annual evaluation when the child is (6). Curious how that worked for you in your state.

@Rebecca that's exactly what I'd like to do with my daughter just provided ideas as to what to teach weekly in order to keep me organized. I will look into Abeka, too. Also, I see you are a Floridian. So am I! How far are you from Bradenton?

@Nicole I grew up in Illinois 😅 they're changing their homeschool laws wildly (and concerningly) right now. But when I was growing up, the state never checked on homeschool anything, so we didn't have to worry about any of that.

@Grace me too! I lived in Crete, IL most of my life. When I met my hsuband we move and lived in NC for alittle while and now we are in Florida. Where in Illinois? And omgosh how lucky! In Florida you have to higher an evaluator when the child turns (6). That's unless you go the homeschool route with an academy. This will be one interesting journey!

@Nicole I’m in the panhandle so about 7 hours 😅

@Nicole i grew up in Bolingbrook! So near Chicago! I'm in South Carolina now, I know this state requires reporting but I'm not sure how much and how often.

@Rebecca Oh boy!!! To bad your not closer I'm always looking for mom friends lol

@Grace I think all states are starting to become a little strict with that.

Another question for you ladies.... as far as writing goes, do both of these programs provide an influx of material where I don't have to go elsewhere? If not, any other suggestions for learning to write?

@Nicole I didn't use ACE at the younger grades so I'm not sure, but I don't feel like there was enough writing in high school and I would supplement with some research paper writing and literary analysis writing...I'm not sure who offers courses in those though. My degree is in English Education so I intend to just teach those and make the curriculum for those myself

@Grace I will look into that!💓

@Nicole Abeka has both cursive and manuscript writing materials for learning penmanship depending on which you want to teach.
