So I would make more than £123 a week with my employment but I'm a teacher that's contracted in so no way of picking up anything extra . I'm making that but then obviously the holidays I'm not so I'm not sure how much it would take down my wages or how that would work?
Can’t you get maternity allowance if not entitled to SMP?
I don't know i don't understand it all?
I don’t understand much either. But a friend of mine quit her job just after finding out about her pregnancy - basically it just wasn’t worth the hassle as she would get same amount whether she was on SMP or maternity allowance- as it is set standard as £187 per week or your gross weekly earnings if it’s lower than that. From what I gathered, maternity allowance is for people whom are not entitled to SMP.
Definitely check out the maternity allowance calculator on line on the government website. If you follow the pages etc in order it’s really simple and tells you if you’d be eligible. Both my first and this time around I’m eligible for MA and the form is long but worth it!
With self employed you can usually just make a voluntary NI contribution to Top up to get it
Oh man it's so confusing 🙈. Who would be able to keep me right on how I should go about it or find out whats best ,my accountant doesn't seem to be much help .
Honestly just Google it! I did at the beginning and I’ll be filing as self employed and paying the top up that I need to, it’s all on the gov website x
Could you try going on ‘pregnant and screwed’ I think they offer lots of support and advice with stuff like this
Thanks everyone
For your 1 day a week teaching employment it will depend on whether your contract is term time only or if your pay is pro rata or salaried. Does the setting/ your employer have a maternity package which you're entitled to? It might be worth speaking to the HR team and seeing what their policies are around maternity leave and pay. All employers must have a maternity policy by law. Good luck x
Maternity action also have loads of great stuff, you can call or email them too
I was made redundant in December and found out i was pregnant on Christmas day. Baby was planned, redundancy wasn't. I've recently started a new job but unfortunately I won't be eligible for SMP either as I haven't worked there lomg enough, I will have to apply for maternity allowance through the job centre. Not only that, as i was made redundant and technically not in employment I lost the funding for my other child at nursery for the current term, so it's costing us nearly £1000 a month to send him to nursery for 4 days a week until September when I can get the funding back. I feel like I've been properly shafted
I think there’s maternity allowance that you can apply for if you can’t get smp. I’ve looked into it because I don’t get smp from work either x
Ah I don’t know about the self employed side but I have a job I work one day a week 7.5 hours and I know if I don’t make £123 a week on average for the two paydays between 15 and 25 weeks I won’t be eligible for smp. Are you able to pick up extra shifts so you earn over £123 a week on average for those 10 weeks?
