Weaning

Hello I’ve started to wean my baby doing purée and offering a finger food alongside it. I’m not comfortable with BLW but thought I’d try today as I was offering a banana. When trying the banana spear it broke off in his mouth is this normal? I fished it out straight away as I was worried he’d choke.

Hey, I totally understand the anxiety - it’s a stressful milestone 😅 Yes it’s normal and okay for it to break off. It’s best to leave it in his mouth though, fishing it out is more likely to cause choking and also stopping him from learning how to deal with it himself. Choking is if the baby is quiet or making a high pitched squeak and going blue / purple. Then you need to intervene. So gagging = fine (but still stressful I admit 😕) Have you searched in your area for any kind of weaning workshop? Or can your HV advise? I went to one with my first and it made me much more confident with weaning. Xx

@Jo I honestly just panicked when it broke off he’s gagged on other purses and I know that’s normal just got worried but I may ask the HV to come by xx

Oh don’t worry, we all do it to start with I swear ☺️ it takes so much restraint to leave them gagging. It will come in time, and as the baby’s gag reflex moves further back they gag less. You’ve got this ❤️😅

@Jo it was just the bit that broke off looked massive 😂 I’ll try again tomorrow xx

They are little buggers right??? Always trying to scare us 🤣🤣

Completely normal, but I understand the stress! I am hosting a free online event with over 20 experts talking about issues related to being a new parent and child development in the first year, including 2 weaning consultants. This could be really useful for you as you navigate this milestone. You can get your free ticket here https://thechildcarenavigator.com/bump-to-1stbirthday-summit211853
