Hand chewing?!

How can I tell what baby boy wants from hand chewing? He’s 8 weeks old and on 5oz every three hours, how do I differentiate between exploring his hands and hunger??

Mine does that aswell and he’s 3weeks old. I say it’s more hungry. If he’s opening his mouth also, would be it. Are you formula or breastfeeding? 🙂

My girl does this too, I read it can also just be self soothing. I look out for if she is also rooting or smacking her lips together.

Its hard, i used to go touch their nose or just under and if they remove hand and try to eat my finger, then i try feeding

@Lorraine I’m formula feeding , he doesn’t react to me touching his lip or nose like someone else has suggested so I don’t think he’s hungry. First time momma so just open to hearing everyone’s suggestions.

@Kathryn I’ve seen that it could be self soothing - he doesn’t lip smack when he does it just chews. First time momma got me questioning everything 🤣

could potentially be teething? not too sure just a suggestion x

My 11wks old has been chewing his hand from 2wks and still does. Sometimes, he tries to put both hands in the mouth while I'm breastfeeding. 🤣🤣 I think it's self soothing and exploring all in one

After a certain time they will escalate if hungry. I had the same issue but would also put my finger side on in her mouth if she really suckled I assumed hunger.

I asked my health visitor as my boy does the same and she said it’s a normal part of development and it’s good that he does it. I can tell it’s hunger when it becomes more aggressive and I can hear him really sucking on them. I also have a reflux baby and signs of reflux can also be the same as hunger signs and hand chewing is one of them because they want something to chew on so they can swallow the acid back down again
