Maternity leave

When are most people starting their maternity leave in the UK? I was originally planning to work until 38 weeks, but I’m now considering taking 2 weeks of annual leave beforehand, meaning I’d finish at 36 weeks. Is that fairly typical here? My manager is based in the US but I work in the UK, and I can already sense she’s a bit uneasy about me taking the full 52 weeks off so I don’t know how to feel about asking annual leave on top off that.

I’m planning on going on mat leave at 38 weeks and trying to save as much holiday as possible. But if you need to go sooner, you do what’s right for you. US mat leave is very different but you’re entitled to take the full 52 weeks x

I am going annual leave at 35 weeks then mat leave from 37, mostly because I’ve not used any annual leave this year and I can’t wait to finish, I have annual leave to tag on to the end too but I’m also not planning on going back so it makes no difference when I finish really!

I’m going on mat leave from 38 weeks with one week annual leave before hand. Employers can’t dictate when you start your maternity leave, even though they might want to it’s pretty illegal.

I’m shutting down my laptop on the 13th June that takes me to 37+4 Take the two weeks! I’d go earlier but I’m self employed

I’m taking two weeks off before I’m due but going on mat leave once he’s here. So hoping he arrives on time haha Probably also depends how it goes as may be struggling for or feeling differently nearer the time x

i’m going at 31 weeks

I’m going at 36 weeks. Last time I went on annual leave at 38 weeks and had just finished getting the nursery sorted when my waters broke. My daughter was born 2 hours into my mat leave at 39 weeks so I want to make sure I get a break this time!!

I’m finishing at 37 weeks using 3 weeks holiday and maternity officially starts on my due date x

Ive booked to be off from 20th June, which is 37 weeks + 5 days. Planning to start mat leave 1st july provided baby sticks to schedule

I also have a US manager but work in UK. I was planning on going on leave at 39 weeks/1july in order to be eligible for pay review (as I will have worked 6m of the year!) While I'm on mat leave I become eligible for a 20 day sabbatical and my work has been advising me to take my 21 days accrued leave & sabbatical instead of my last two months of mat leave...but I want to take my mat leave then add the hols/sabbatical on! Not sure if they'll go for that tho tbh!!

@Ally Same thing my manager suggested I cut my mat leave and take holidays instead but I am not very happy about that. I want to use holidays before and after the mat leave as stated in the HR policy …

@Sarah That’s what I want to avoid haha. I don’t want to finish work and go immediately into labour. I feel like I need a break before

I’ve just used up four weeks annual leave and started my May leave on the 20/4 ☺️ I wanted to chill before baby comes

I'm going from 38 weeks. I don't get AL as I'm a teacher, so wanted to go as far as possible to have the extra time when they're here. I'm having the full year off too xx

I’m going on maternity leave at 39 weeks as I have a hybrid role. I’m not taking annual leave beforehand as want to take my annual leave to use at the end of my maternity leave. I would just weigh that up as they have to carry it over legally they can’t say no to that :) I am only taking 9 months maternity leave though and then will use the holiday to work 2-3 days a week for a few months. My holiday runs July to June so it’s a little different :).
