When is a cesarean section an “emergency “

When I’ve mentioned that I had a csection I’ve gotten asked if it was an emergency situation. I was scheduled (more like went to my 38 week appointment and was asked “wanna have a baby today?”) for an induction due to a “wavering heart rate “ basically saying my son had no baseline heart rate. It went from ~105 to around ~175 with no consistency. The induction went on for a few hours (I can’t even remember how long tbh) But his heart rate stayed steady at ~180 and started to climb higher. My heart rate started to climb at that point and that’s when we went for the csection. So yes it was a point of risk to carry on vaginally but to me that’s not “emergency “ What do y’all think? When is a csection deemed “emergent” I wasn’t RUSHED into OR things were still pretty calm.

Thank you! He’s a year now. I need another!

I would say that's an emergency section. A heart rate that high is classed as foetal distress, which is an emergency x

I was in active labour for 15 hours with baby back to back and wasn’t dilating past 8cm and baby’s heart rate went up as did mine so was told a section would be the safest option, I still waiting 30/40 mins to go ahead into theatre but they gave me an injection to stop contractions. It was still classed as an emergency section because of foetal distress x

I would say that’s an emergency c-section. I had a c-section at 39 weeks but it was planned. At my 36week appointment baby was breeched and my OB told me that we will book the c-section for when I was 39 weeks but if he flipped we would cancel the c-section and go natural

No clue! Do you regret having a cession? I’ve had 3 c-section and have lived to tell the tell! Are you and baby healthy ? If so I would not worry about it at this moment and enjoy your baby

I’m curious why you are interested in the definition? There are 1000+ variables when giving birth and the mother is a rockstar hero anyway it happens. Anyone who asks for a gory details of a birth is kind of invasive... you don’t need to explain yourself. The hospital did what they needed to, to ensure you and baby were healthy. Unplanned/planned... it’s always to keep baby and mum healthy, whether that’s physically or mentally. Enjoy your baby, you are a rockstar 💕

Emergency c section basically just means that you were planning for vaginal delivery but needed to do c section due to high risks during labor. So I would say emergency C section

Hmmmm... I’m feeling this whole thing around C section too... I am having a scheduled c section in December. So a planned C section, however the reason for it is because if I gave birth naturally my womb would more than likely rupture- therefore an emergency for baby and me... I get the feeling that people root for natural births and look sympathetically at you when it’s a C section- why does it carry such a stigma?!? I have tried for a looonnnggg time to even get to where I am and if a section brings our baby into the world safely then that’s what must be done. I will be just as proud of us regardless of how he was delivered- he’ll be a miracle no matter what. Rant over 🤣

Yes! I’m confused about the stigma aspect too, births are a private moment and I’ve no idea why anyone feels it’s acceptable to ‘judge’ another person for anything that happens, in both pregnancy, labour or birth plan. There should be no reason to justify any choices we or the hospital make during this process.

I would call that an “unplanned c-section” ... not emergency

Mine was because I had a fibroid blocking the exit, I only dilated 4cm and my son's head came out with a 4cm ring from trying to push through. Didn't feel like an emergency but it was , there was no other way out lol

It’s called an unplanned c-section, I had the same after a failed induction!

They gave me a csection because she was taking too long to come out but nothing was wrong with either one of us

I was induced due to hypertension at 38 wks. I was in labour for 19 hours. After epidural was administered, my babies heart rate dropped because they restarted the oxytocin back at high dose and baby didnt like. Do had to drop it back to the start dose again, I made it to 6cm and then they discovered my baby had turned and was facing the upwards and was basically stuck. So I was failure to progress. That was about 3am, they scheduled in emergency c section for 8am. They had to do spinal block, and during that her heart rate plummeted again and they rushed to get her out. She just needed oxygen for 5 minutes and was all good.

As I understand it according to Patient Access there are two types of emergency c sections. The first is an unplanned c section where things are not progressing as they should/ so called “failure to progress” and the second a crash c section where life is endangered. I agree there seems to be a stigma amongst some about c sections and I was embarrassed to admit I’d had one. In my case I developed a very rare complication and had no choice. It wasn’t even possible for me to sign the consent forms.

C sections are generally considered emergency when there is a high risk to baby or mom. Throughout my pregnancy my nephrologist asked me if i scheduled my c section yet. I am a kidney transplant recipent. My kidney is in my abdomen next to my uterus. And i kept saying no. I do not plan on doing a c section.there is more risk of infection It is actually safer to do a vaginal birth. Which is TRUE. But i was my transplant centers first pregnant patient. Anyway. In the end i developed cholestasis of pregnancy and had to be induced at 36 weeks. I ended up having an emergamcy c section too because the umbilical chord was wrapped around my sons neck.

Yeah I would say that was unplanned....no panic or anything but baby had to come out! I had an emergency one...baby not coming after pushing almost 2hours, failed instruments, at midnight they said section and she was born less than 10mins later. If I hadn't had an epidural already they would have had to knock me out as they couldn't wait for an epidural to kick in!

I had an emergency c section. My baby wasn't dropping and his heart rate wasn't looking good. I was 41 weeks and my baby had swallowed meconium. They tried to get him to drop but no luck. They inserted some probes to stimulate his head to see if his heart rate would change at all. No luck so within 15 min I was rushed into the operating room. I ended up having complications tho my uterus wouldn't contract back and I was bleeding out and had to get 3 units of blood transfused. I ended up on a vent for 8 hrs in the icu. They used staples because They thought they were gonna have to do a hysterectomy but thank God everything turned out ok. Turns out tho even if things went OK I would of had to get one anyway bf the umbilical cord was wrapped around his belly and both his ankles.

We consider a technical emergency csection when the surgery occurs under 30 minutes of calling the section (decision to incision). We can usually get the mom into the Or and ready to go in under 10 minutes. This is life threatening in the moment and may include a “splash” with betadine instead of a normal chlorahexadine scrub of the incision site. The doctor may cut quickly with a blade instead of bother with an electrical laser type cut. These are all emergency. A step away from emergency we call “urgent” where we have a bit more time between decision and incision, we can get consents signed, instruments counted, incision site scrubbed without splashing, etc etc. it needs to be done quickly but it’s not life threatening in the moment. Hope that’s helps haha

I feel like if it’s a matter of life, death or safety, that’s emergent. I was in active labor with my son for 46 hours three of those hrs I spent pushing. After three hours and him not advancing further , his heart rate shooting up with each push, my bag being broken by hand gave me a fever and infection mid labor so me continuing to push would have caused major complications for me, him or us both. My son crowned but still wouldn’t pass through, I was rushed to an OR for an emergency c section. It was never in my birth plan to have a c section but if I didnt get it, my son and or myself may not have made it.

I was told through out my pregnancy that I was going to have a c-section because my placenta is low but now at 35 weeks I was told that the doctor is allowing me to deliver natural because my placenta moved enough to let the baby pass. I’m scared that because my placenta is still low that it might turn to an emergency c-section. Now I’m just waiting for the baby to be ready which is scary too

Mine was a emergency as I got sepsis during being injuiced

Consultant told me at the hospital that any unplanned C section is classed at emergency due to being unplanned.

It's nobody's business why you had a c-section. Even if you just had bad anxiety about labor and decided to schedule a cesarean for your own reasons, that's fine. You're not any less of a woman and you're not a bad mom because you made a choice to do what was best for your family. I hate it when people ask those kinds of questions so they can judge you if you answer that it wasn't an emergency. Sounds like it was pretty important to me! Glad you and baby are healthy now. 👍

That is emergent. You or baby could have had a stroke.

So cute!!!!!
