My son went through this phase. I agree with Bestan. We held his hand to prevent him from continuing and said "no we don't hit" We also took his hand and softly touched our face while saying "Yes! great job! Gentle touch"

Consistency is key. Changing your reaction to the action each time will make it more interesting to continue to see what you will do next time. Stay on the same positive disciplinary behavior when that happens. Do that and they will give up knowing nothing interesting happens, only that. For example holding his/her hands gently but firmly and saying No, hitting is wrong. I will not let you hit. Stop it now!
