Hi Louise, I had the same issue with my baby and HV advised I feed her 30-40ml, burp her and then continue feeding. So I would burp baby after every 30-40ml. It helped her a lot . Hopefully will work with yours too x
Pace feed (if bottle feeding) if breast feeding remove from breast regularly to burp. Then hold upright for 20-30 mins after the feed. If that doesn’t reduce or stop it worth seeing a professional as could be an allergy but I would say unlikely based on your description.
Thanks for your advice everyone. We have always burped every 40ml and keep him upright for as long as possible after every feed. He is a little whingey when bringing up the milk but not unsettled like he was before we started the infacol. I did mention to HV he was still bringing up milk and she said it’s unlikely he will be prescribed anything as it’s not affecting his weight gain and he’s having plenty of wet nappies 🙄
The orange flavouring in infacol can make reflux worse, and since it takes a week or two to build up in their system that makes sense time wise. Have a look at rockabye_hub on Instagram, she helps find the root cause to reflux/colic x
I found infacol made my LO’s reflux worse. He was prescribed gaviscon which worked wonders for him.
My boy has CMPA and bad reflux, we are on omeprazole atm, we started off on gaviscon it he would throw that up too, since being on omeprazole he doesn’t cry when the milk comes up now but he still throw up a lot !! I’m currently fighting the doctors to change his milk, but they are reluctant as it cost more 🙄 so I’m still being fob off as just the reflux being the issue on why he’s being sick…. But the same as you he will cry till he throws up xx
Infacol is more for gas than reflux I thought? It helps group gas bubbles together so they can burp/wind more easily. But for reflux you'd want something like Gaviscon or omeprazole. Gaviscon didn't work for my baby at all, omezaprole had been amazing. There's other things that could be at play like tongue tie, milk allergy, etc. I hope your LO feels better soon
Your baby probably reacted to the carobel, it’s common. Thickeners aren’t great for babies x
I have heard baby probiotics can help tremendously with digestion upset and colic. Just something to consider in addition to the doctors medicines. ❤ I hope baby feels better 💕
If you intend to use a thickener (gaviscon, Carobel) may I please suggest that you stop the infacol? Our LG had reflux and colic too, and we used both together under the supervision of our health visitor, GP and even NHS 111 as it got so bad. However, we eventually spoke to a locum doctor and he asked us to stop and explained that infacol is designed to collate small bubbles into one big bubble to make wind easier for baby to pass. The thickener is designed to keep the milk in the body rather than coming back up, which slows down digestion and leads to constipation. The impact of the two together is the bigger infacol bubbles get trapped amidst the thickened milk in the digestive tract and baby cannot pass it, meaning they are stuck with really painful wind that is really hard to relieve :( Someone above highlighted another key issue - the orange in the infacol aggravates the reflux, too. Warm baths, tummy massage, bicycle legs then knees into tummy, tlc & anti colic bottles all help
Also, your GP would absolutely prescribe if they felt it necessary. Do talk to your doctor if you want to try a thickener. We liked Carobel and used to (again with our gp’s consent), give our LG just enough of it so it would control her reflux but not make her constipated. It took a lot of trial and error to find the right balance for her! She was a healthy weight, gaining and producing plenty of wet nappies too when diagnosed with reflux. Our LG used to have 2 oz out of a bottle every couple of hours. We think the milk was soothing her tummy so she was constantly asking for it. After she had her thickener she started finishing her bottles in full and moved towards a more regular pattern.
Thank you all so much, going to monitor it for a couple more days and speak to GP x
It could be milk allergies I would log down how much he is bringing up and how often and keep informing your GP because I've been going through the same thing and have only now been given any appointment for his allergies
