NipT test WRONG!

Has anyone else experienced this? NipT at 14 weeks said boy but ultrasound at 22 weeks said absolutely a girl. Still waiting to hear if there was a lab mix up etc. the nipt results said they were 99.4% accurate. I can’t seem to find anyone else with the same experience. Praying baby is healthy as the scans showed everything is perfect. Id rather not go down the road of genetic testing

It doesn't happen often but it does. It didn't happen to me but a friend of mine was told she was having a girl nipt test, anatomy scan, and all ultrasounds. Came out boy. Luckily she wanted a boy but she only had all the girl stuff. My advice is to get neutral items for now. Maybe get another NIPT in case there was a mix-up

Mine was correct, but there are instances where external genetalia don't develop as much as they "should", or don't match their internal sex organs. I would definitely get a test to make sure that wasn't happening. Can you have another NIPT?

I wondered if this is possible. When I’ve told the ultrasound techs that we did the NIPT test and it said girl they don’t disagree so this doesn’t seem to be the case with us. I would have assumed the NIPT test to be more accurate than the ultrasound as techs can see something wrong

Mine was wrong. I had tests done privately in a clinic. There was low foetal blood in my initial sample at 13 works eventually had further two draws. One at 15 weeks and one that also failed and one at 17 weeks which they were able to test. I was told I was having a girl. My son was born in May ( the ultrascan had picked up a willy at 20 weeks so wasn’t a huge shock when he came out) My bigger concern was if that was wrong what did it say about the other far more important results. In the UK our medical care is paid for via our health service so this was an expensive outlay at £400 ($500) only to be wrong and not offer the assurance I was looking for.

I’ve heard of NIPT occasionally being wrong where someone’s been told girl and then had a boy but I’ve not heard the other way round. I do also personally know 2 couples at different hospitals told definitely girl at their ultrasound and turned out to be a boy xx

What did you end up having?

@lydia girl!

@Nae can I ask if you know which nipt test it was? Which company? Mine was Myraid and said boy so just curious!

@Jenny yours was the nipt test also? Not sneakpeak? Can I ask which company you went through, if you remember?

@Jamie yes, my NIPT said boy. Sneak peek actually said girl! Mine was through invitae.

@Jenny ok thank you 😊 I know it's awful but I'm hoping my nipt test is wrong even though I know it's rare! I have a boy already and nipt says another boy.. I have my 20wk scan on feb 6th. Did they give you a reason for why they thought the nipt was wrong? The only thing I've seen is twins and only one made it.

@Jamie likely just a lab mix up. I understand! I was honestly hoping mine was wrong too because I really wanted a girl, I couldn't believe I was in the 0.01% of incorrect NIPT results. But I will say when there actually was doubt it was very stressful and I worried that there was something wrong with the baby.

@Jenny right that would be scary also. I've seen a few other people with in correct results and they just redid the NIPT for them and then it was correct. So I would hope that's what they'd do for me. Although I'm sure I won't be in the .01% 😅 we wanted 2-3kids and this is our second so I was really hoping it was a girl so we can be done. I'm still on the fence for the 3rd and would be heartbroken if it's another boy. Which isn't fair to baby either 😔

Hi @Nae just picked up this post through googling! I am Going through the same. NIPT at 10weeks + 1day said Boy. 20 week scan and a 4D scan at 26 weeks scan couldn’t determine due to positioning, had a 29 week scan and it came back girl! apparently a very clear girl with 3 people checking! I am now worrying if everything is ok with baby / placenta. If you don’t mind me asking, did you have any post birth tests on your baby girl to make sure all was ok? Feeling very nervous and anxious at the moment!

@Jenny hiya. I am currently going through this, NIPT said boy at 10 weeks and ultrasound at 29 weeks said a clear girl (scans previous couldn’t determine due to positioning!). I feel really anxious about how I got a boy result! NIPT test clinic have redrawn my blood again to see what gender comes back as. Feeling very nervous. Did you do any post birth checks in your baby girl to make sure all was well? Thank you x

@Kathryn they tested her cord blood! But it came back normal girl. Seems to have been a lab error! But I understand, I was very nervous too when it happened.

@Jenny the NIPT clinic have redrawn my bloods to see if it comes back girl to align with the latest ultrasound, praying it does! I am glad all came back well with your baby girl! Did you let them know about the discordance beforehand so they knew to check the cord etc? I haven’t spoken to my midwife yet about it, but assume that’s the next step?? Thank you for replying x

@Kathryn yes I reminded the doctors ahead of time. I hope it just comes back girl for you, it would save sooooo much headache!! My Dr. said there wasn't a point in redoing the NIPT. But both of my sneak peek results came back girl.

@Jenny I’ve just redone NIPt and bloods came back boy again, but had another scan with senior consultants who are certain it’s girl! I think the next few weeks are going to be a worry 🙈🙈

@Kathryn just saw this now! We didn’t do any further testing because the nipt redraw came back 100% girl. If male dna was still present they would have suggested doing amniostesis and other testing for possible issues.

@Katie what was your Fetal Fraction?

@Aimee I’ve just had a look to see if I can find the email where I finally got a result and can’t find it. Over three years ago now. They didn’t inform me what it was with first two redraws. I should say this was the Harmony test in 2020 which apparently has since fallen out of favour due to error rates. I did the PrenatalSafe test this time round, which was more expensive £560 but did give me a result after one draw with a 4.0 foetal fraction . Have much more confidence in the whole thing.
