Lletz procedure and pregnancy

Has anyone had a lletz or leep procedure done for an abnormal smear and able to have a normal pregnancy afterwards? I read it can caused an incompetent cervix, after digging around all I can find is horror stories. I’m struggling to get a consultant appointment brought forward, I’ve read you should scan at 16 and 20 weeks to measure the cervix.

Hi Laura, I’ve had LLETZ for high grade abnormal smears and we were advised to have a baby now incase I need any more LLETZ in the future. As far as I have been told the risk of problems are very low after just one treatment but consecutive treatments can thin the cervix which can lead to incompetence. I’m 13 weeks and haven’t had any extra care as you don’t get referred if you’ve only had one treatment

Hi, I’ve had 2 lletz treatments and got referred for extra scans because of this. I had a scan at 11 weeks and 2 more at 17 and 23 weeks. Surprisingly at the first scan they measured my cervix and found it was within normal range so treatment doesn’t necessarily mean anything may be wrong. I also got to see baby so feel reassured I’m getting extra scans. Fingers crossed for you

I had a LLETZ about 6 years ago and the midwife didn’t seem to be concerned. They said I would have my cervix measured later on in the pregnancy, and I have received a letter for a telephone appointment with the Obstetrician at almost 24 weeks.

I've had one treatment in 2016 and I have to go for another colposcopy in June. The midwife has referred me to see a consultant to decide whether I need to be consultant or midwife led.

My midwife told me it’s only potentially an issue if you’ve had it done 2-3 times. I’ve had it once so no concerns!

Thanks everyone for spending the time to reply! This has helped alot. It seems that some providers really don’t seem to bat and eyelid and others have more scans. I’ve booked some private scans for piece of mind and I suppose that’s all that can be done. Got my 12 weeks today so will ask them to check the cervical length and I’ll monitor myself, got an epu scan at 15 weeks and a private gender at 17. Ans then we get an nhs one at 20, so I suppose I can then just reassure my self that way! Xxx

I had LLETZ once 8 years ago and I was referred to be consultant led with my first appointment this Thursday at 13 weeks. Maybe it depends on how much of the cervix was removed?

I had LLETZ done back in January this year and they found cancerous cells but thankfully removed them All but I have to be seen every 6 months for the next 12 years as I am very high risk. I am 12 weeks pregnant, have my scan next week and already been referred to a consultant at 14 weeks and more scans throughout but maybe mine is different as they did find cancer as opposed to nothing. I’m having a cervical length scan at 18 weeks aswel but I’m not concerned at all - I will be under consultant and they said may not carry full term but I knew that already.
