Lactulose not working

My baby is 6 months and has been on lactulose for around 3 months due to issues with constipation. His doctor said to give him it everyday twice a day until he was able to pass stool easily himself. I have been giving him it everyday and for a good while it was working absolutely fine but as of recently I’ve noticed that he will pass soft stools normally for a couple of days then go a couple of days without passing one (still receiving the laxatives twice a day) then when he does eventually do one it’s hard and seems as though he’s in pain when trying to pass it. Not as much pain or crying as before when constipated right enough. Has anyone else dealt with similar?

If I’m remembering correctly I’m pretty sure you can desensitise to the use of laxatives and your body becomes accustomed to it! Have you tried some other natural options like stewed courgette a friend of mine swears by it!

For him to be so constipated maybe his milk isn’t agreeing with him? If you’re BF maybe cut certain foods out to see if it helps, but if formula I would change it 🤷🏻‍♀️

@Olivia oh really i didn’t know this!! The doctor said to give him it everyday so that he got used to doing it on his own. Oh I will definitely give this a try thank you! X

@Summer sorry forgot to mention he’s formula fed. I did say about changing it to the doctor and he was kind of judgy saying “all babies will end up constipated if formula fed and not breastfed” insinuating that changing milk wouldn’t matter but I was kind of like… first time mum but pretty sure that’s not right? He’s on SMA extra hungry and have been thinking about moving onto the follow on milk so that may make a difference but not sure

@Danni oh wow wtf? Hungry formula is very notorious in making babies constipated as it’s really heavy on the stomach, I would 100% change it!x

Hi, sorry I’m not able to help with your questions but I have a question? my sons been prescribed with Lactulose from today. He keeps spitting it right out. Can I mix it into his milk?
