I would start with a normal lead not a retractable one so it’s easier to hold in your hand and the buggy at the same time. For safety of the baby I wouldn’t ever attach the lead to the buggy itself coz Altho he’s small if something scares him or another dog attacks him etc he’ll flip the buggy with the baby in it. It’s always better to be safe then sorry. Also start with short walks until he gets use to it n then build it up to longer walks. You could always have someone walking with you just along side you incase it’s gets too much so they can take the buggy or dog just for the first few walks?
I second the handsfree lead it was a big help. I also trained my cocker to cross from one side of the pram to the other so she was either away from the road or if there was a person/another dog coming towards us I could get her out of the way without an issue.
Thanks ladies, I felt sorry for my boy today as he wasn’t misbehaving he was just a bit stressed I could tell and didn’t help a huge group of walkers came past us and he wanted to run home. I have a non retractable lead at home which I’m going to try later or tomorrow. He walked so nicely with me towards the end when we were by a road but I think it’s because he was hot so he slowed down. Xx
@Jolou I do have a baby carrier which I will probably use if I can’t get the hang of the pram walking but it’s such a shame if I can’t as we got an all terrains pram for walks due to where I live and if I can’t use it I’m going to be pissed 😂😂
My boy is also very sniffy. My lb is coming up to two so we've had a bit of practice now. I got him a slightly longer regular lead (poppy &Ted's I found were a great length as it's long enough to not have him too close to the pram. Ideally have him on a harness rather than a collar so that he can't slip it. Then we did lots of practice. Mine likes to always be on the side of the path away from traffic which got very messy when crossing the road so I taught him a go under signal and now as we get to the other side he crosses in front of me and behind the buggy so he doesn't get me tangled. You will be a muddle the first few walks but you get into the swing of it once everyone knows what theyre doing. Mine now knows to wait for the pram to go first if we're going into an alley or somewhere where the space is tight. The more you do it the more you'll see where there are issues to work on and to begin with you'll be pulled in all directions. We've had many a close call with tipping prams 😬
@Bethany lol yes you will use the pram! I have a cocker spaniel so the wrap was essential 🫣😂
Once you have been pushing the pram for a couple of months you will have managed to do it with one hand I have a non extendable lead for walking with the pram but I do quiet often out the baby in the sling for dog walks as it’s easier where we live the walking paths aren’t pram friendly but if baby wearing at home practice squatting down with baby in it as you won’t be able to bend over to pick the poop up
I have a lead that can wrap around my waist, tried to walk my lab once with it like that while my son was in the pram and ended up having my trouser and panties pulled half way down my legs in the middle of my small village 🥴 I DO NOT recommend one that wraps around the waist 😬
@Amy omg 🙈. I can imagine that would happen with labs lol. I like hands free waist leads but that’s because my dog is small/medium sized. I def would find an alternative if I had a large sized dog too lol.
Since becoming pregnant I’ve had huge issues with him even wanting to go for walks. My MIL used to take him out daily but now he won’t leave the house with her most days. Especially if I’m home. We had him done to calm him down as he was a very playful pup but it actually made him worse in some areas. He’s now very nervous and just wants to be at home. He will play ball with me and my partner indoors for hours and has zoomies every night so I know he’s happy. But I do worry sometimes that we don’t do enough for him! But then I think maybe he just wants to be with his people. He used to love other dogs but now he’s a nervous wreck around them. He doesn’t like people (especially men) coming in the house either. Before he used to just take himself away but now he barks at them excessively and only stops if I hold him. There’s been a lot of change for him and I do feel sorry for him xxx
Oh bless you!!! I have a hyper cockapoo and she’s now an angel on the lead with a pram. Definitely no retractable lead, you also may find that a harness is more beneficial than a collar for walks? Is his recall good off-lead? I do a mix of local road walks with the lead, and some woodland/park walks off-lead with my dog. I also don’t walk her the same time every day so she doesn’t ask for walks if we’ve had a rough night 😊
@Steph Sheldons recall is hit and and miss. He was playing with a dog off lead once, all was well, they both ran off playing and Sheldon had actually ran home! We also keep him on the lead full time now. He’s so used to it, he rarely pulls more than the lead allows. He can be a bit hit and miss with other dogs so it’s safer I keep him on. I could never let him off in the woods, he would find a scent and never come home! Sheldon very rarely asks to go for a walk. I always ask him if he wants to go, some days he walks out the front door, wees on the lamppost then wants to go back in the house 😂 xx
Oh gosh seeing this makes me dread what my two Labradors wills be like 🤣
I REALLY need to do a practice run with my two (rotties), now I'm defo taming some support 😂 x

@Grace I definitely recommend it 😂 I think if im going to do walks im the future I’m going to take the car so I can control who I get in/out the car first rather than the dog trying to get out the door and me trying to get the pram out the door and then getting stuck. Xx
@Bethany who to get out the door first is already giving me anxiety 😂
@Grace I’m going to try going round the back next time as my hallway is rather small and at least I know I have got both dog and baby in the gate rather than trying to get the dog in the lounge whilst leaving the baby outside so I don’t have to worry about the dog bolting back out the door! So much to think about. Think I’m just going to use the baby carrier 😂
Get one of those hands free leads !!!
Hi don’t really have advice sorry, but have a dachshund who’s the same kind as yours. He’s lovely and likes other dogs and people, but he’s also stubborn and pretty strong. I would suggest maybe to get a good harness so if he’s pulls he woke choke himself, it’s also recommended for their backs. He also has a bad habit of moving from one side of the pram to the next I don’t know how to solve that either sorry. I use a retractable lead just to try to make it a bit more interesting. But try do some lead training in the garden if you have one that is so then he might stay on one side when your walking. Good luck x
I have a walk belt which clips round my waist and have zip pocket for poo bags etc. It has metal loops each side to attach dog lead! Think I got it off amazon, wasn't expensive. I have a double ended lead or a halti training lead which both easily attach. For reference I have a German shepherd and she pulls and it does the job and doesn't interfere with clothes. I haven't had baby yet but I am planning on using this when using the pram or just holding her on the lead like normal with baby in a sling/carrier. Xx
I did the same thing. I found a running leash works really well because I can have the dog attached around my waist and both hands on the pram if needed. We used lots of treats in the beginning to train walking in only one side, but I also have learned not to be afraid to bring them next to me and make them lay down to stand on the leash if I’m ever concerned that they are going to charge after something or get too excited.
I have a 30kg English bulldog who at times can be very stubborn. I use the halti training lead which has multiple hoops and clips both ends of the lead, this allows me to attach the lead around my waist and my hands are free to push the pram, I also used a baby carrier a lot when my boy was little. A harness may be better to stop your one escaping! X
@Bethany ah that’s great that you won’t get harassed for walks once baby comes then 😊 Shame about the recall - what a pickle!! x
I have a beagle. Get a dog walker🤣
I had to get a dog walker, and family walked him for the first 6 months. After that, I used a sling because it was lockdown, hard work though!
Patience, practice with lots of short walks, alternate between having baby in carrier and in pram, I found short leads are better. Reward with small treats. Pram clips to hold lead, make sure you hold lead when stopping never rely on the pram to hold a dog back. I'd always advise harness over a collar, you have more control overall with a harness. Good Luck ✌🏼🧿
Hey hun i walk both my 2 50kg dogs with just normal leads like rope ones if that makes sense and i just wrap them round my hands and hold the pram and they walk so much better i tried retractable and nightmare mine walk really well anyways on normal leads one of my dogs is reactivate but i have control of him but just the normal leads so much better and walking at a fast pace helps them not sniff and ponder lol but sometimes i just find a quiet green bit park the pram lol and let them do a little sniff walk they always like that x just thought i comment on what has helped my walk my dogs and what i do i love hes name by the way lol xx
In the early days I used a baby wrap it was far easier. But if you have the pram wrap the lead on your wrist so your hands are free or get a waist lead. Others might have other ways 😊
