gestational diabetes

Found out this week that I have gestational diabetes. I had a roller coaster of emotions and now I’m trying my best to eat well. Anyone else? Any food / snack suggestions? I was so excited to go into the holidays being able to eat everything 😭

Same!!!!! It’s horrid- I’m on meds and testing sugars 4 times a day and I’m fed up! Mine isn’t being affected by what I eat as sugars aren’t changing so they are talking about giving me insulin a few times a day. I’m being mindful of what I’m eating but I’m feeling stuck as nothing is changing whatever I do! I think be mindful and reduces excess sugar but at this point we can’t cut everything out so try not to punish yourself! Xx

@Lucy Sinclair oof! it’s so brutal! sending you love and hope you get through this ❤️ that’s really good advice! we’re doing the best we can!

Check out this insta page for food options. This page was very helpful in my pregnancy journey with gestational diabetes. https://instagram.com/gestational.diabetes.nutrition?igshid=NzZlODBkYWE4Ng==

I was diagnosed at 13w! Just aim for 15 carbs/snack, 30-45 carbs/meal and match or exceed those carbs with protein! Breakfasts I love doing mushrooms, spinach/kale, sweet potato, breakfast sausage, cheese and eggs all mixed up together Lunch and dinner I just find some kind of carb whether it be brown rice or potato, etc and I pair it with ground beef or any other meat I have, and I add a veggie Snacks my go to’s are- protein bars (Barebell is great), Greek yogurt with granola, strawberries, cheese sticks, almonds, protein shakes, boiled eggs, cucumber slices with laughing cow cheese & everything but the bagel seasoning You can still eat pretty much whatever, just in moderation and add a protein shake and a walk! Exercise after eating will improve your numbers tons!! I’m on 16u bedtime insulin currently as fasting numbers are the hardest to control, but it’s really not bad at all 🙂

Baby Carrots and ranch

Yogurt with fruit

Definitely recommend starting weight lifting, even if it’s 5 lb dumbbells. Also walking immediately after a meal. There’s a muscle in our calves that help with sugar spikes

Secondly, I would recommend a second opinion. The sugar drinks given don’t necessarily give an accurate control. It’s assuming we eat nothing but sugar. But in reality, if you eat balanced meals, you’re less likely to get the sugar spikes. My midwife is giving me the option to choose the sugar drink that is super popular with the general public. But there’s another option, one that is drinking a drink AND eating a meal. I’d look at what clinics offer that near you

so i don't have gestational, i was already diabetic before pregnancy. it's hard! but the good news is in most cases it'll go away after you give birth ❤️ the bad news is food is harder now lol That doesn't mean don't have your snacks and cravings but be mindful about them! Maybe if you know you'll have a slice of cake or something sweet later, lower your carb portion earlier in the day. As an example, if you're eating chicken rice and veggies, take away 1/4-1/2 cup of rice from your plate and add another piece of chicken and extra veggies. as for snacks i've had a hard time there. There's sugar free jams and keto breads so you can have a slice of bread and jam, or you can have fruit (ideally later in the day not in the AM as that's when your sugars are the highest and resistant to insulin) because it's a simple sugar and breaks down quicker. You can also try veggies like celery and carrots dipped in french onion dip that's my new craving and it's delicious!!

those crisp breads by WASA i believe are very good replacements for crackers, they're longer and multigrain so more fiber + nutritional value and you can put some cream cheese and cucumber slices with salt and pepper (my favorite snack!) or even some peanut butter and sugar free jelly. if you crave chocolate, instead of milk chocolate go for dark chocolate! i find it kicks my craving and i eat a lot less of it because it's so rich. also fair life makes super yummy low carb protein shakes, they're great and so does two good. remember a great way to get your sugar down without medicine or if you ate something sweet or high in carbs is to walk or do some exercise!
