Trapped wind / Reflux - desperately need help! Please read!

My 3 week old baby is having really bad what I assume is trapped wind at night (from the bottom end!). He has Aptimil formula and expressed breast milk. He has breast milk at night and formula during the day. He also has 1 pre-made bottle of formula a day. He has infacol every feed and has done for 10 days due to colic. He feeds 120ml, he burps really quickly and I leave him upright for around 20 minutes before settling him down on his in his next to me but 45 minutes after a feed he wakes up and is either sick, has hiccups, then screams and is just generally really uncomfortable. He strains really bad and holds his breath whilst straining. He tenses up his legs and bum. Eventually he falls asleep (usually on me as he won’t lie on his back) and around 7/8am he has a giant explosion of wind and poo and looks much more relaxed. Ive tried giving him a massage, bicycle legs etc, he has a bath every night for the warmth on his tummy, I’ve tried the Frida Windi, but nothing seems to work! I went to the doctors who said we can try baby Gaviscon but I’m reluctant because I’ve heard it can make them constipated. From 4 weeks he can have lactulose but does anyone have any advice? I hate seeing him in pain! 😖 I’ve attached a video of the noises he makes, and he makes these almost constantly in between crying out.

No advice but I'm in similar boat. I'm breastfeeding and baby is 3 weeks tomorrow. The consistent advice I've been given is time 😭😫 their digestive system is still immature. I'm finding it hard to watch her be in so much discomfort and sleep so little due to the pain. She eventually passes out for few hours after being overly tired. But other than that 30mins-1hr during the day 1.5hours at night with lots of squirming and screaming. I've been using Infacol for the last 48hrs. Sad to hear yours not getting much better after 10 days.

We have had the same with our 4 week old. She has been terrible with wind for a couple of weeks and we tried everything! Tried Colief drops as well but it doesn't seem to shift it. She is the worst in the evenings and night 😭 spoke to the GP and they said all you can do is ride it out when it comes to colic! Health visitor said the same. I think she is slowly improving so I assume that is just down to the digestive tract maturing. It is horrible but it will pass x

@Rachel hang in there with the infacol, it definitely helped him with his burping / getting wind up which halved the problem! Just make sure you use it before every single feed (I didn’t realise!) after a week you should definitely see some improvement. I was told time by the doctor today as well 😖 they did also suggest an anti reflux formula because apparently it’s thicker, but I thought breast milk would be better!x

@Zoë are you using the colic relief drops constantly? Initially I was using them occasionally when he had wind, but the midwife told me to use them before every single feed (she kept her little boy on them for 5 months, it has no lasting impacts etc) after a week I definitely saw a huge improvement with his colic!! X

@Abbie Yeah every feed ☹️ finished the bottle already haha. We haven't got another one yet, will see how she goes now. We haven't used it the last two days and she seems to be a bit better at night 🤞 X

My 3 week old is in the same boat with trapped wind - but how is yours eating 120ml a feed?? If mine did that he'd projectile vomit! (He has done so before haha) Worth mentioning though that my 3 week old was born early so he is tiny, maybe on time 3 week old eat more 😀 We just switched to premie teats and slow flow rather than the newborn teats (they were also slow flow but bigger) and it seems to be very promising so far. My milk let down at night is hardcore so we plan on expressing and using the teats for now, as he was 99% on the boob all night before and getting horrible wind. Either my letdown is too much or my nips are too big for him and he's taking in air. It's really horrible to see them so uncomfortable isn't it.. little one wasn't sleeping well and getting rather moody, we just got the premie teat today so fingers crossed the results continue to be good 👍 he's just had 2 feeds and no fussing after so I'm really hopeful. I hope you find a solution, it's hard as all babies unique!

@Heidi I have no idea! I just went off what the formula box says, 0-2 weeks was 90ml and then 2-4 weeks is 120ml, he drinks all of it! Sometimes if I could give him more he’d drink that too 😅 he was born at 37 weeks and weighed 6lb 10oz, he now weighs 6lb 12oz. I use the MAM bottles and have moved from teat 0 to 1 and I found he preferred it! Babies are strange little things!

My baby is 7 weeks and is the same! She has CMPA so the prescription milk has cured all her symptoms of that and gaviscon for reflux but the trapped wind is still a problem! We use mam bottles but I’m considering changing bottles as I’ve tried dentinox and currently trying infacol even though it could make reflux worse but not sure what else to do

Our girl is exactly the same and is 3 weeks. Went to the GP today to be told essentially there’s nothing that can be done and should resolve by 3 months as their digestive systems are immature 🙃

Hello @Abbie sorry to hear this about your LO. My almost 3 week old girl goes through the same grunts and struggles after feeds. I never thought to get the Infacol but now through the comments I think it is a good idea just to help her with some pain relief. I also do combi feed, BM for 15mins and then 60-70ml Aptamil formula. Once I burp and hold her for 20mins I settle her down and she starts spitting a little milk up, gets hiccups and grunts. I thought it was normal although I am a first time mum and never asked GP or HV what is normal. I sometimes take her up on the boob just for soothing and seems to work. My LO came 4 weeks early so Im taking each day as it comes with less sleep, cluster feeding, crying etc. It is hard and lonely as my partner works to make ends meet so I am glad I have this community on here. I hope your LO will feel better soon and I hope for mine too after tomorrow. Btw how many drops of Infacol do you offer to your babies?

@Suzanna Hey! The grunts etc are all totally normal, but I would definitely recommend infacol! I read somewhere that grunts, strains, all those noises can sometimes just be your baby learning how to pass wind or poo! My little man came at 37 weeks and my partner is back at work too, so I feel you! I just give one drop of infacol, it really has been a life saver. Freddie would be so much worse without it!

Mines is the exact same ! Constant grunts strains lifting legs up and seems relief for short while after a poo which are all soft. I started him on cow and gate comfort milk it’s been 1 week now and have seen an improvement. The formula is thicker which helps he was guzzling is milk to fast x

@Bonnie this is good to know! I’ve just bought the Aptimil anti reflux which is thicker so I’ll give that ago as mine is a guzzler too! And his poo’s are also soft, almost watery! X

@Abbie thank you for the tip. Definitely I have faith in my LO as she has been eager to come out so I know she will make it through. So happy to hear Freddie is doing better. And although not at the sane zip code happy to connect and chat here.

My little boy has been exactly the same! He was initially breastfeeding but I couldn’t keep up with how much he wanted to be on the boob as I have a 17month daughter too. He guzzles his bottles and takes in sooo much wind, He is 3 weeks old and drinks 150ml every 3-4 hours and was born 39 weeks weighing 7lb 6oz he now weighs 9lb 8oz 🫣🫣 he’s a tank 😅 my daughter however is only 9kg and 17 months old 🥰 but the noises on this video are exactly the same as him after every feed 😢

Everyone's babies are eating so much 🥺 making me think little one isn't doing so well, he drinks between 40-60ml a feed about every 2 hours. He was born at 36 weeks and gaining weight so slowly 😔

@Heidi every baby is TOTALLY different! If your baby wanted more you’d know about it. Don’t beat yourself up! I’m sure he’s doing great! If you are concerned, maybe just mention it to the health visitor or a midwife? He was born early just like my little man and it took him a while to get to where he is now with his eating. He still only weighs 6lb 12oz and he was 6lb 10oz when he was born! Remember, every baby is different xxx

@Heidi that’s completely normal !! Every baby is different my first boy would drink half of what my second now drinks and there was longer periods between feeds to both healthy and thrived the same x

I’m in the same position my son literally sounds like the video you posted. He is 4 weeks and also taking infacol and it seems to help during day but night time he finds it so hard and he doesn’t settle and if he does it’s normally on me and takes hours to do this.

@Bonnie @Abbie thanks both, he drinks himself into a milk coma and I feed whenever I can get him to take milk - he was 3.25kgs (7lb 12oz ish) when born and weighed 3.20kgs 2 days ago - health visitor isn't worried since hes steadily gaining but will reweigh until he does hit his birth weight. FTM and have been BF a lot which always makes me unsure he is getting enough - we have only been giving formula for dad feeds while I catch up on sleep but now I'll do my best to express instead for a while and see if his gas gets better. I bet he would eat more if he wasn't full of air 😅 But thanks both you made me feel less anxious ❤️

He sounds exactly like our 4 week old, I really thought it was just him..he does this throughout the night and the same - whenever he’s laid down at night he’s sick shortly after and keeps groaning like this! The only way he settles is if he’s lying on his tummy on me or my husband! The GP also said we could try gaviscon but I tried it with my first and she got worse with it! Do you think it’s more to do with wind or reflux as I really can’t figure it out?!

This app is great I really didn’t know this was a thing never had it with my first but my lil one is exactly like this and I thought it was just him and not a common thing. Also been confused if it is reflux or wind or gas

@Heidi Honestly they are all different 🥰 like I stated above he does drink 5oz now at 3 weeks old but my daughter she drank about 1.5oz a feed at 3 weeks both completely different, my little boy has gained weight really fast but my daughter she gained super slow, infact she lost weight and never went back to her birth weight until she was 6 weeks old! Both happy and healthy 😍😍 if your little one was hungry still they would be crying for more so they must be satisfied, so 40-60ml is completely normal too 😍

@Rhea I definitely think wind more than reflux! I give Freddie infacol and it’s halved the problem so I feel the wind / reflux side of things is sorted. It’s almost like he’s incredibly constipated, but his poo’s are still super soft and some of them are just like water! Occasionally he farts and a burst of watery poo comes out (sorry for detail 😂) but he’s so relieved after! The GP told me from 4 weeks they can prescribe baby lactulose, but I think it’s a combination of them understanding and learning how to poo as well!

We found using a smaller teat and Infacol worked for our 3 week old when he was throwing up ant being fussy xx

This sounds exactly like my little girl was & I switched from infacol to colief and she’s been fine since ☺️

Can I give baby infacol after a feed?

I know it says to give before but I always forget

@Bonnie I did this & she projectile vomited 🤮 so haven’t done that since haha x

Oh gosh lol 😂

My little boy is a week old and is breast fed. We hasn’t had any issues untill last night when he vomitted his whole feed! We’ve since then kept him upright after every feed and have tried the koala breast feeding position. He will not settle! I haven’t been to sleep yet. Gave small amount of infacol which my partner is convinced what made him vomit. I haven’t thought about giving formula untill tonight, even caved and gave a dummy. Am I being stupid. What else can I do to soothe his hiccups, grunting and discomfort 😩 also pooing multiple times a day very watery and come out like a fart explosion!!! X

@Rhiannon it’s unlikely infacol would have made him sick, the midwife told me there’s nothing in it that is absorbed into the body it purely just breaks won any bubbles! My little man wouldn’t breast feed so I expressed and thankfully I’ve not had any problems! From all the research I’ve done I think my baby is suffering a bit from infant dyschezia, or ‘grunting baby syndrome’. It’s perfectly normal and it’s just when babies are small they have to work out how to use their brain and muscles together in sync to poo. So it sounds like they’re constipated but their poo’s are perfectly normal. Unfortunately though for that there’s nothing that can be done it’s just time while they learn! I caved and gave my baby a dummy when he started suffering at around 2 weeks and it soothes him so much. He only gets worked up and struggles at night. I’ve started using the ‘windi gassper’ stick and it’s a life saver in the moment where he’s screaming in pain!xx

@Rhiannon also if your baby is suffering with abit of colic, personally I would keep using the infacol but you have to use it before every single feed and won’t really start to see results for a week or so and then you just have to keep it up. Freddie had colic the first week and infacol honestly saved me! My midwife said she gave it her little boy until he started baby led weaning because it’s harmless but is such a lifesaver xx
