Hi!

hi, my name is Des, im 22 years old, I’m 20 weeks pregnant and I’ve just been told at my anatomy scan that my son has Polydactyly, he has two extra fingers or digits, one on each hand. I had no idea how to feel when I found out about this, or what to ask. But I felt myself move past it because this is my baby boy and I’m gonna love him no matter what, but there are other things I worry about. Today I found out it runs in my side of the family, my grandmas cousin had an extra digit on her foot. My doctors told me he would get the digits removed shortly after he’s born, and I just worry about that causing him any pain, I also don’t want him to feel any shame or anything from this, he’s my rainbow baby and I already just want to protect him from everything and he’s not even here yet I realize I don’t know anything about this, but I’m hoping to learn and know others going through the same thing

@Daria this is what I’ve been worrying about, thank you for sharing this with me, we plan on getting his extra digits removed after birth I just worried that it might make me feel ashamed of himself or his body and I never want that, but I also don’t want to risk him being bullied for it in school, kids can be so ruthless and I can’t think of him having to deal with that over something he could never control

The way I thought about it was- If I had extra digits I would have liked to have had them removed when I was little and had no memory of it but you need to make the right decision for you and your family 🥰

@Lauren hi! We had our baby may 29th at 34 weeks gestation, since he was so premie he spent the first two weeks and a half of his life in the hospital, he was in the nicu for almost a week, then got moved to special care unit which is considered a step up, and shortly after got his extra fingers removed, they’re basically all healed up and he didn’t seem to have any pain with them being removed and he seems to have really good ability to grab at things lately especially my hair which he didn’t do before we got rid of them, but that could be because he was just so tiny before
