KIT Days

Are KIT days compulsory? Do you have to do a full working day or a few hours? I'm only off 6 months and would rather not do them if I don't have to x

No I didn’t do mine as it didn’t work out financially beneficial as I didn’t have an unpaid period so it just would have cancelled out what I was getting paid maternity wise for the day ☺️ x

@Hannah thanks 😊 x

They aren’t compulsory and you can chose when you do them and how many hours, you only get 10 days and no matter how many hours you do in a day counts as 1 KIT day, I started doing half days and then gradually did some full days to ease back in to it x

@Hannah Hi sorry to jump in! Can you explain this to me Hannah please? :) My maternity leave is 12 months and I have averaged payments so I get the same every month. When I asked about pay for KIT days I got this response: “You will be paid at your basic daily rate less a portion of SMP for each KIT day worked.  Pay office would make that adjustment.” Does that mean they are not financially worth me doing either? Thanks!

@Abby hi I took 12 months off also and spread my maternity over the 12 months. I felt the KIT days did top up my wage just a little bit so I do think they are worth doing! Hope that makes sense x

@Nicola ahh that’s helpful! I feel it’s so hard to get an accurate projection or idea! I was planning on doing 2 days per week for my final weeks 5 weeks of mat leave but I wouldn’t bother if it wasn’t for the financial incentive! X

@Abby just to say check with your trust re amount paid as if we did them we only got paid for the hours not a full day and we also couldn’t spread money over a year only 9 months so Nicolas trust was different and may be the case for you. If you are off 12 months and have 13 weeks unpaid at the end then anything is worth it if you have 13 weeks unpaid. I spread my pay over 9 months and couldn’t afford to have the 13 weeks unpaid. So a kit days pay for me equalled what I would get paid anyway as you get paid for one or the other. It would depend what band you are and what that worked out as averaged across however long you can average for. Hope that makes sense! 😊

@Hannah I think at mine we get paid for one full day rather than amount of hours. I also have my maternity pay spread over a year so don’t have any period of time that is unpaid. I’m a band 7 but not entirely sure how it all works. When I asked they just said: “You will be paid at your basic daily rate less a portion of SMP for each KIT day worked.  Pay office would make that adjustment.”

Basically you’re probably best working out what your days pay is (pre maternity pay) and working out what you are getting averaged over a year if you’re doing that and work out if your day of pay is more than your day of omp/smp. If it’s more per day then it’ll top you up and be worth it 😊

okay great thanks ☺️

@Abby you get paid a little more for kit days. So I got a full days pay but they deducted the omp daily rate, I did one as a study day had a free spot that I wanted to do and the spaces don’t come up very often. But sure if it’s the same but you won’t get the same mat pay every month, they work omp out over the days your off for the full mat leave so I would get more OMP the months when there were 31 days in the month. And obviously smp is only for certain things weeks and can’t be split.

That was meant to say not sure if it’s the same

thank you, this sounds kinda like what I was expecting! a lot to consider!

No it’s not. I was off 7 months and didn’t do any.
