Can someone help me understand

We were advised to go for IVF because my husband was recently diagnosed with MFI. We have been TTC for 1.5years. His numbers were 8mil, 2% normal and 70% motility. What are the chances of conceiving naturally? The urologist said we could try varicocele surgery but an improvement in numbers is not guaranteed. We left the clinic with so many questions unanswered and so much uncertainty any explanation would help.

Does your husband have a varicocele?

I’ve heard the surgery is a bit hit and miss with improving sperm stats. It’s all about diet and health. Sperm takes 3mths to replenish. So no booze, no smoking, no hot baths or tight clothing, no protein gym shakes, lots of vitamins (ashwanga in particular), hydration and fruit and veg. Test again in 3mths and you will 100% see an improvement! We did :) but we decided to take control and not leave it to happen naturally so we did ICSI/IVF ended up with 7 embryos and got pregnant on the first round.

My husband has a varicocele and was told that the surgery might not improve stats. He also had mumps as a teenager so his issue is likely to not be fixed by surgery anyway. He had 1.5mil, 0-1% morphology and 60-70% motility. They told us we could try if we wanted to and chances were not 0, but we had IVF/ICSI and got pregnant with first transfer

@Molly yes he does apparently

Thank you for your responses. Very helpful. Do you know what the ranges should be to be able to conceive naturally? I know morphology should be around 4% but is 2% considered very low?

Speak to your go but our morphology was 1% which meant that they were shaped differently and struggled to get to the egg or borrow into it. Two tails, short tails, no tails, two heads, small heads. Basically not your perfect tadpole shape!! ICSI is brilliant as the sperm is put in the egg rather than ivf where they fight it out in the dish! If sperm morphology is your only “issue” then the chances are you will get pregnant quickly via this method. Assume you are not going private but you could always apply for ivf, keep trying and then hopefully you may get pregnant during the wait :) which could be months and months. Is your partner following a strict lifestyle to improve his swimmers?

My husband had a vericolectomy that unfortunately didn’t work. After strict died and exercise we later did genetic testing prior to ivf and learned he has cystic fibrosis. All of this to say that even though his morphology is 0% we still very much have a chance with ICSI! The surgery wasn’t too bad, he actually felt relieved after and started wearing pants that actually fit and weren’t baggy again. This could help your husband’s quality of life and may even help narrow down what the underlying issues are. Good luck to you, sending positive vibes 💖
