Practice breathing

Hello, my little one has frequent biophysical exams/ultrasounds due to me being high risk. In a bpp, they are looking for various things like correct level of amniotic fluid, muscle tone, and movement. They also look to see if baby is practice breathing. My son always passes with all the points BUT he nearly always needs a little assistance with practice breathing. They have to use this vibrating buzzer wand against my stomach to “wake him up.” Without the wand, he has only done practice breathing on his own 2-3 times. Often times he’s doing it, but not for the 30 seconds he is required to for the full point so they end up buzzing him anyway. I guess I’m just curious if other moms have experienced this? The doctors don’t seem worried but I’m being induced at 37 weeks so I’m worried him being early and also a little lazy at this particular skill could lead to trouble breathing directly out of the womb. Any thoughts or stories?

I’m 35W and my doctor told me it’s normal for them to be lazy with the practice breathing since their lungs aren’t fully developed yet. I guess it might depend on how far along you are in your pregnancy as well. It might just be normal for baby. At 37W baby is fully developed so lungs should be working perfectly fine by then but every baby is different.

I think best case scenario for baby is to let his lungs finish developing. Getting induced can do more harm than good putting more stress on him. Please research all the risks associated with what they are inducing you with and weigh whether it’s best for you. I personally don’t have any experience with what your are going through but it’s just my thoughts on what I would do. God bless you and baby 💗

@Lucille it’s not optional. I’ve had a very high risk pregnancy with various complications. We are all quite impressed that we’ve managed to make it this far (currently 35 weeks). Most important thing is for baby to be ok and unfortunately staying inside of me is not the safest route. Thanks for the concerns though!
