Travelling to Nigeria from the UK

Hi, I’m hoping to travel to Nigeria next year but there are no appointments at the embassy in London till February to renew my expired Nigerian passport and to get an appointment for my sons to get their first Nigerian passport but I am planning to go earlier. Also can’t get visas as the appointments are also not available till Feb. I was informed I could travel with my expired Nigerian passport and my sons can get emergency travel certificates. I wondered if anyone here has actually travelled to Nigerian with an expired Nigerian passport (having a valid British one) or ever used the emergency travel certificate? Even better does anyone know of any way to go about having a fast track appointment at the embassy to get the passports? If you’ve managed to read this essay 🙈 - thanks haha! And one last thing, any mums here been to Nigeria (Abuja) recently? Any tips?

Hi, My aunt did that but that was during COVID, so don’t know if that still applies now.

As at last year I know they issue emergency travel certificate allowing you travel to Nigeria with an expired passport and renewing in Abuja .

Thank you so much @Chiamaka & @ADA

I had the same issue last year and i ended spending time in ghana instead but i managed to speak to the nigeria high commission ppl who said i can go to them any date after the appt date for 6 months. Not sure about before though, worth texting them!

@Nk just to say thanks for posting this. We want to go in April and I hadn’t even considered that we might already be pushing it. Thanks for the inadvertent heads up ☺️

I went with an expired passport in July this year and my daughter a travel cert and renewed in Abuja

@Onyinye Thank you for the information. I contacted them and they said I can travel with the expired travel as long as the airline allow me. I called the airline (BA) but they said it’s up to the Nigerian embassy 🙃

@Moon you’re welcome :) Yes seems worth sorting it all out the earliest you can. My mum did advise me earlier in the year and I just thought ohh there’s plenty of time lol. Turns out I was wrong 🙈

@chika Okay nice, glad it worked out well for you and your daughter. I’ll be doing the same when I go in Jan and fingers crossed no issues at that time

@Nk lol we’re too relaxed 😄
