@Katherine we have to pay it all back £1,130 😭 can’t believe it thought we qualified but turns out we don’t. When I applied I put our incomes in so don’t understand how this has happened and two months before Christmas aswell no idea how we going to pay this back
That's odd as Gov raised the cap on child benefit since then as well. Strange it didn't tell you when you applied too. £80,000+ for 1 parent is when you don't get any of it... Some would say if you don't get CB, then you already earn a lot to start with - I always keep this in mind! I don't know the details of when you have to pay it back in terms of timeframe. Hopefully not straight away. X
@Katherine last year my husband did earn over £80,000 purely down to a lot overtime, allowances and he got a bonus. With car finances, credit cards, huge tax deductions, mortgage and bills etc doesn’t feel like we as a household we earn that much even though 80k sounds high, it’s madness. I earn 12k for my part time hours and that £100 I used to get a month really helped with classes etc 😓
Yeah I never applied for this reason. Because I knew that with bonus etc we would never be entitled
It's a gov thing that is super annoying, when you apply there is a disclaimer that you can claim it but have to do self assessment and pay back what is owed. So they send you all th3 money and put the responsibility of knowing if you should pay back on you. Honestly, arses.
I opted in knowing I’d have to pay some back because I’m slightly over the threshold. I thought it was made pretty clear when applying that if you were over you would be responsible for doing a self assessment tax return to pay it back. Seems fair enough when you earn over £60,000 which is an awful lot of money to most people. We are like you and have one decent wage and one much smaller wage and I was extremely shocked we could get any CB.
We chose not to receive the payments in the first place for this reason. I guess you can always do that for next year if you wish. Depends, do you have to pay it all back or some of it? It'll depend on his income. I know a mum who claims CB then the dad has to pay it back - seems a bit pointless to me but it works for them!
