I am in the minority, but I actually had a terrible experience with mine. In 2017, my copper IUD failed. I was unknowingly pregnant, and also backpacking in central America. When I got back, I caught a cold, went to the doctor and was instructed to take a pregnancy test. I got tested and then found out that it was a non viable pregnancy, aka a miscarriage. Anyway, it really just gets worse from there. The IUD was very painful to get out because of my swollen cervix from pregnancy. It was more of a yank 😖 I highly recommend the Nexplanon if that’s available to you. It does have some hormones but honestly the best birth control I ever had.
To be fair though, I think most people have a fine experience lol I just know if I’m ever in that situation again of having failed birth control, my preference would not be an IUD.
The biggest issues are it makes periods longer, heavier and more painful. If you have easy periods it won’t be too bad, but if you already have heavy or painful periods it is not the choice for you as it will make them unbearable. Had to remove mine as I was having to change a super plus tampon every 45 minutes max!
@Rebecca I agree with this, my friend had a similar experience. Whereas I had light periods so they have still been manageable after the IUD was fitted. Definitely something to consider x
Great thanks so much for everyone’s input. Really helps having a range of views around it. @Sarah im so sorry that happened to you. I can imagine that must have been a horrible experience. But atleast you have manage to find something that’s suitable to you. Yh I tried the pill the other week and came up in rashes so I quickly stopped. Didn’t seem right. And also still breast feeding so that’s why I have been considering the hormone free option. @Rebecca yh thankfully mine aren’t that bad. It might hopefully not cause a heavy period. I have my appointment booked to get it. But I’m unsure whether to get it. My sister says she loves her one as it doesn’t impact her at all.
@Sophie thank you. I’m glad it’s been positive for you. Did you take any painkillers before the procedure
I didn't, but did following as I had some mild period cramps (more for comfort tbh) could have gone without x
Honestly it's the best thing I've ever done, should have got it years ago. I spent 10 years on the pill and dealt with horrendous mood swings and depression, I now feel absolutely fine because of it being hormone free! It was slightly uncomfortable getting it fitted but nothing unbearable, I'd highly recommend it x
