potty training

is it normal for potty training to not be linear, and to feel like you take steps backwards sometimes? we've been nappy free (apart from overnight) for just over a week and at tue weekend it felt like things we're going so well - hardly any accidents, did her first poo on the potty etc. but today and yesterday it's been constant accidents. feel so deflated sometimes with it!

We've had lots of ups and downs. We were accident free for ages, then he had a few weeks where he weed where he stood even minutes after he said no to going. Now he doesn't have wee accidents but he won't poo in the potty, he only does it in his pants then says done a poo. He'll get there eventually. It's only been a month for us and he's still very little

@Sophie it's hard going isn't it! i see you have another little one too, same and it's hard dealing with the accidents while looking after them both. as you say though, they're still so young so i'm sure they'll get it completely at some point, just finding this part a bit frustrating😅 thanks so much for your reply xx

It's been the worst part of parenting so far for me. We've been nappy free for 5 months now! And we'll go like 3 weeks thinking we're absolutely smashing it. And then have 2 days of so many accidents because she's got a snotty nose or something. It's such a rollercoaster

@Alaina i have to agree about it being the worst part! this age is sooo fun apart from all this😅 i've dreaded it, i knew i'd struggle with it. glad it's not just us struggling though, thank you for replying! xx

Maybe they’re not quite ready yet. If you think that’s possible , then don’t put yourself and them through the stress. It’ll only drag it out. You could wait 3 months and it could be done in a weekend! X

@Gilly i have considered that she isn't ready, but she takes her nappy off as soon as it is the tiniest bit wet and i'm struggling with that and looking after her little sister at the same time, so think now is the best time especially as my husband is currently off work xx

Yes, definitely! But Rome wasn't built in a day

@keisha🍉 also so many people will tell you that it's because they aren't ready. My little one had every single sign of being ready. Like every single one. And I just think it's one of those things that you can lay the foundations for in like a week but for them to actually perfect it, I've been reading it can take like 6 months. Also after a period of accidents I was just going throw in the towel and try again later. But would my little one put a nappy on? Absolutely not. I think consistency, calm and patience has been the key to success. Id say my little girl is 95% toilet trained. Little tiny wee spots when she's busy playing and then goes oh shit I've forgotten about that and runs and tells me.

@Alaina this really makes me feel so much better. thank you so much for taking the time!

Literally what @Alaina said. The alternative was to go back to nappies when I was going to pack it in but that was worse. He didn't want to wear a nappy, took it off, felt uncomfortable in it, I'd have to pin him down to put it on etc. Just because they're not doing it perfectly, doesn't mean they aren't ready.

@Vin thank you so much! i'm pretty sure my daughter would be similar too. makes me feel so much better hearing other people's experiences, i was feeling quite rubbish about it all😅

Sorry. But if it takes 6 months , it’s because they’re not ready 😅

@Gilly but what would you suggest for our kids who refuse to wear nappies? it sounds like alaina's and vin's kids are as ready as they can be, maybe it just takes some kids longer than others

Some of the children at nursery, their parents send them in wearing the absorbant potty training pants. I’m assuming you’ve used pull ups? And not just nappies? If the problem is with the nappies, that’s different to being ready to potty train. Honestly , I’m not being argumentative. With my first I was desperate to have him potty trained, fitted in with his brother arriving and lots of other things, I ended up having to do a lot of cleaning and changing etc. I left it, then at 2years 8 months old. He got it. He was 100% ready and with only 2 accidents, he was done in a weekend.

@Gilly we use pull ups for when we go out for walks, but as soon as we get home she'll take them off too. i'm really glad to have anyone's input and opinions on this post, but the tone of your comment did feel argumentative. i think we're all doing a great job whatever way we decide to potty train!
