Can I take children to get a car mot?

UK based. Hey all. I think I’ve heard they don’t like car seats when you hand your car over to be able to test the seatbelts. However I solo parent so I don’t have an option I have to bring my baby and toddler with me. Would this be okay?? Also I have a feeling it will fail, what happens if you can afford to fix it? Do they give you options or has anyone got any help tips/advice? Coming from a solo, struggling mum right after Christmas 😭

You can leave the seat in when it has it's MOT it won't fail on this but it's in the notes that they couldn't check that seats seatbelt due to the car seat. I think for if it fails then it may depend on garages but most will expect full payment. It may be worth checking with them before having it done if they do any payment plans but what I do is pay for it on my credit card then pay off my card in monthly installments.

Not sure about the car seats but whenever mine has failed it’s been something really minor like a lightbulb or a tyre, so no more than an extra £50. If there’s something really wrong with it you probably will have noticed it already? If you have a credit card I’m sure you can pay with that to help you spread the cost. Or if you have a mate that could fix it then you might be able to get them to do it and take it to be retested but then you might end up paying for the test twice. If it’s really bad and a lot needs fixing the garage might offer to buy it off you.

They should always call you ahead to confirm the quote to repair to get it through its MOT. Make sure it’s a recommended trusted garage that won’t stitch you up. I hate to admit it but can you take your dad with you so they don’t see a clueless single mum? You can make a decision then. It really depends on cost of repairs vs value of car. Unfortunately it’s safety - so you will just need to pay for it (credit card if you have to).

You’ll get an advisory for the seat belt, and if two seats you’ll get two advisories. I got one with my MOT in November. They should tell you what the repairs are before doing anything, and quite often the re test after is free. However if it fails and you don’t fix it, you then no longer have an MOT and technically can’t even drive your car home. If you think it’s gonna fail I’d try and get a dodgy one done

They will usually call you to leg you know if it fails and to ask if u want them to do the work (with a cost for it). You'll likely still have to pay for the MOT cost though

@Gemma thank you for your advice! What do you need to take with you? Anything? It’s not my first with this car so I don’t need my v5 book do I?
