Am I wrong?

I decided to skip my 16-week appointment because I’m honestly just feeling overwhelmed with everything and don’t want to add more stress. I’m not even sure I need to go because I’m feeling fine, and I’m not dealing with any complications right now. When I told my mom, she flipped out and said I was being irresponsible and that “every appointment counts.” She made me feel guilty, like I’m not taking proper care of myself or the baby. But I really didn’t see the point in going if everything felt fine. So, I’m wondering—how much do these appointments really matter? Was I just being lazy, or is it okay to skip one if everything seems fine?

I think you definitely should go Not only for baby but for yourself as well , maybe talk to them about you being overwhelmed with your appointments

I have my 16 week appointment in January and one of the things I know they do is check your urine for proteins at each appointment which I believe is a check for preeclampsia. I also think they will check your blood pressure. So I would say on the basis of both these tests it would be worthwhile going as you wouldn't be able to tell this by yourself. I'm sure they'll probably give other information also by I'm yet to see this. Overall I just figure it is one of the appointments that ensure I have the healthiest pregnancy possible and to have a healthy baby at the end. Ultimately though it is a personal decision for each couple navigating a pregnancy.

All of the above plus they often listen to baby’s heartbeat with a Doppler so you can hear too and they like to hear everything is good with their heart. If you explain this all to your midwife they might offer a home visit instead if that makes it easier

Definitely important, they check urine for any UTIs or high proteins, most people don’t even know they have one, at 16 weeks I got my second blood draw to check for spinal issues in the fetus. They also just check for a heart beat and make sure the heart rate is fine which is something you can’t tell on your own. And monitoring your blood pressure. All very important for yourself and baby

Yer they are important, the midwife will be looking at your blood pressure and urine samples at every appointment and listen for the heart beat at others, she will also begin to measure your bump to make sure you don’t need to be checked with growth scans. She’s also looking at your welfare at the same time, if you’re showing any signs for abuse etc at home. These appointments may seem short or pointless but these midwife’s are really trying to keep us and our babies as safe as possible xx

I’ve had 5 appointments so far plus phone calls every 2/3 weeks I’ll be going to my 6th appointment on Thursday then I have my 20 weeks scan 2 weeks on Friday and then 10 days after I’m having a Doppler scan then I’ll have midwives again and I’m waiting for a date to have a scan on my heart, liver and kidneys (I have high blood pressure) and they want to see why I have it , I’m also waiting on dermatologist due to a pregnancy skin condition oh n I have an appointment on the 6th for a diabetic eye test ,unless I really can’t make it then I’ll attend every single appointment to me their all important in their own way and too top it all off I have a 17 month old, please call up and ask for another appointment if you can just make out you was poorly that day x

As others have said, just because you feel fine doesn’t mean there’s not an underlying problem, I had a UTI around 28 weeks and had no idea.

Thank you all for the insightful contributions. I totally get it now ❤️

I thought I was fine at a routine appointment but they found preeclampsia and I was admitted straight away. I had my 16 week appointment for this pregnancy as few weeks ago and it was lovely to get to know my midwives and to hear the heart beat. Made me feel so much more excited! Explain how you feel. They will be so lovely and understanding ♥️

Only thing they did at mine was check blood pressure and listen to heart beat. It was pretty pointless.. they never checked my urine at all.

It’s not ok to miss appointments. For one that appointment could have gone to someone else, you have wasted the midwife’s time - they already don’t have much. The appointment is to check on you and the baby. Blood pressure for you, and make further appointment and discuss your care plan. Also listen to to baby’s heart beat.

@Naomi You don’t have to be mean about it. I explained that I was feeling stressed and as the others have explained with kindness, I now see why it’s important to attend every appointment. Thank you for your contribution 😊

I would go, they’ll listen for heartbeat which will reassure you and put a smile on your face. Let your midwife know you how you are feeling and they can offer extra support. Don’t forget they are there to spot any early signs of antenatal depression. This time of year can be overwhelming with so many people to ‘please’ which is awful when your hormones are all over the place. Make sure you take time to yourself and rest x

@Sophie Thank you so much x

Totaaaally get this. Feels like such a chore going to appointments sometimes
