Anyone Navigating EDD Claims for Pre-Birth Disability in California?

Hi Mamas, Some background deets here… I live in CA and my due date is February 10, 2025. My employer is a Texas-based company, and we use Sedgwick for disability claims, etc. Well, I know I’m eligible for 4 weeks of short-term disability before my due date, as per California law, which should start around January 10, 2025. I have a couple of questions: 1. Do I need to apply for the 4 weeks of pre-birth disability myself? If yes, when should I start the process? I created an account with EDD and started filling out the claims, but it seems like I can only enter past dates, not future ones. Does that mean I have to take leave from work first, or is there another way to apply? 2. Has anyone here created EDD claims on their own? If so, could you DM me or comment on this post? I’d love to connect and better understand the process. Thanks in advance y’all!! 💕

You apply the day after you take leave from work. It’s fairly easy! You will need to give your Dr your claim # so they can fill out the form on their end and you start getting your benefits 👍🏼

Your doctor has to initiate you at 36w (or earlier if they feel like you can’t work due to your condition). They kinda get the ball rolling, but you technically can’t start claiming disability u til the 8th day you’re disabled (so if they take you out exactly at 36w, your claim can start at 37w and 1 day if that makes sense). There’s soooo many TikTok’s that explain it better than I do but I’ve don’t this twice and helped so many people haha. Your dr will be very knowledgeable in this - just call them! And it doesn’t matter if your company is in tx bc they need to follow the laws where you live

When I applied for EDD I just went online and filled out my portion of the application, then the doctor needs to sign the other portion so that it can be returned to the EDD. They will factor in where you work and give you an exact amount of how much you should be getting paid. You can apply at anytime, but the sooner the better because it takes a minute to process. Especially right now, claims for Edd disability and paid family leave have been taking a while.

My last day of work was October 16th, did my claim the following day. My due date was Nov 11, gave birth Nov 6th, my disability ended on Dec 18th and currently on paid family leave (bonding).

@Darynka I was intimidated by when I did it it was soooo easy. It’s very straight forward

I worked with Sedgwick as well, they will probably try to deduct your state benefit from your pay. This was terrible for me, they took the money before the state paid me and they took too many weeks and it took months to get them to reimburse me. I highly recommend escalating to your own HR quickly because they will avoid helping with anything unless your company makes them

Yes this happened to me, send me a message!

My doctor did the paper work all i did was sign it and answer a question. The doctor office will send it in. You should get on that asap.

My last employer used Sedgwick. They will process it for you but need a signed form from your Dr and a packet for you to fill out. You’re very lucky to have Sedgwick. They are very speedy at paying out

You’ll have them fax or email the form to Sedgwick. I informed Sedgwick in December 2023 of my leave starting in January (my due date was 2/17/2024) and they emailed me a packet
