When to enrol for Reception
Hi, I’m a bit confused as to when I need to enrol my little boy in reception/school. Currently, he’s just turned 3yrs old and I had been under the assumption I didn’t need to enrol him into school until after he turned 4, to start nursery just before he turned 5. However, my husband is panicking me saying we should enrol now and have until Jan 15th to do it? Any advice would be appreciated.

I think it’s next year unless you want school nursery first but now I’m a bit panicky
I am confused, I thought nurseries take children till the age of 5,then they go to reception
They start reception in the September they are 4 and will be turning 5 in December. So will be starting September 2026.
My little boy has also just turned 3….he goes to nursery, and will continue to do so until sept 2026 when he will then start reception at school. You will need to apply for school between sept 2025 to Jan 2026 for his enrolment in sept 2026 xx

In Scotland for nursery we had to apply last January for him to start this January when he turned 3 years old. Then you apply for his Primary 1 place next year unless we want to defer him and he’ll start proper school when he’s 4.5 or 5.5 years old. It probably varies though depending where you are
