Please help!

I really don’t know what to do anymore as I’ve tried EVERYTHING. My daughter is nearly 4 months old and has always been a very fussy baby especially when feeding, she’s bottle fed and she is so fussy on the bottle, turning away, screaming in pain and having very runny poos. We’ve been through everything to help her, gripe water, Infacol, pace feeding, different size teats, different bottles, burping during feeds. We’ve been through every formula, Kendamil, Kendamil comfort, SMA, cow & gate and amptimal. We are now on a lactose free formula as doctor thinks it could be CMPA but she’s still the same on this milk. I’m really at a loss and just want a happy baby he drinks her bottles without screaming in pain.

How long have you been using the prescription milk for, you really need to give it a chance to work. Only 4 months and you've tried 5 different milks think that may be the problem..

@Rhiannon we haven’t had much choice really, she hasn’t really been drinking the bottles and there was concern about her weight gain so it was all under gp \ health visitor advice, we have been trying to get her on the allergy formula for a couple of months but they refused to put her into it until we tried several different types of formula, she’s been on it now for about 4 days x

Reading your reply to the previous comment... I would 100% say, stick to it for a minimum of 4 weeks. It takes 3/4 weeks for them to "get use to it" and their tummy's settle. Hopefully this new formula works. But I also say, mum gut is real, if you've been sure to the core that this was the formula she should be on, there's probably a reason. Aside from that, have you checked she can breathe okay while taking the bottle? I had breathing issues with my nose as a baby and they had to feed me out of an open cup for weeks until I had a procedure done. Maybe she doesn't like the actual bottles you're using? Is the teat the right size for her? My partner, as a baby, was super fussy, turned out as a new born he wanted size 3 teat and then our LG is 6 months, still on size 2 & won't drink from a faster flow one 🤷🏻‍♀️

FYI lactose free doesn't help with cmpa. Lactose is a sugar, not a protein. I have cmpa and react badly to lactose free things. I have to go goat or vegan. Also it takes on average about 2 weeks to regulate so you really need to give it some time before saying something doesn't work. Give it time to see if the change actually works or not.

@Ellie i think that you’re comment comes across rather harshly, it’s so awful having a baby who constantly seems to be in pain and discomfort, I am trying my best and yes it seems no matter what we try it doesn’t work, i hope you didn’t mean to come across that way but it just feels like people are attacking the way I’ve handled the situation which is why I’m glad I posted incognito

I think you need to give it time and don't be so hard on yourself. I'm just giving information. When struggling, the more information you have the better. And this is also why I hate written instead of talking face to face. Emotions skew how you interpret text. Breathe, you got this, just give it time.

Your HV and doctor hasn't necessarily helped the situation though by suggesting you try other milks in such a short space of time before they eventually prescribed you the baby milk.. going from milk to milk isn't going to help.. It takes time for baby to get used to it.. I really do hope you get to the bottom of it all. Don't let your doctor dismiss you when you try to ask for help.

@Rhiannon i agree! They've definitely made it harder for you OP

Could be reflux? My daughter was exactly the same. She always turned her head when feeding even though we could tell she was hungry, she cried with bottles in her mouth, she also used to sort of arch her back when feeding. She had reflux so we switched to anti-reflux milk which worked perfectly. Either that or a doctor can prescribe carobel which is a milk thickener

Could be reflux for which you can try exercise from YouTube. Also my baby cried as her teats were big and we switched to Phillips avant bottles from 0+ months. Try that.

Oh bless you! My little girl was exactly the same and my Dr recommended Aptamil comfort milk. She was a different baby almost immediately. I know you said you’ve tried Kendamil comfort milk but my little girl didn’t get on with Kendamil at all as it was too rich for her. My Dr described Kendamil as steak and Aptamil comfort as mince which is easier to digest. I really hope you find something that works for her ♥️

They can test for CMPA. Look out for blood or a mucusy consistency in her nappies. That’s definitely what it sounds like to me (my daughter had it) and like Ellie said, lactose free milk won’t make a difference. I don’t know what country you’re in - here, there’s a formula called Aptamil Allerpro or the doctor can offer a prescription-only option. But it would be worth getting a proper diagnosis before you go further down the rabbit hole of making changes and trying to work it out at home. Good luck x

This was my first daughter and the only thing that helped us was omeprazole from the GP. It ‘turns off’ the acid pump in their stomach. It was amazing, however you do have to wean them off it as they grow and don’t need it anymore which is a pain. Xx
