First time health visitor appointment

Hi, I've seen a few posts about health visitor appointments so thought I'd share my experience as I just had mine today. I'd read some posts previously that made me very nervous but there was no need! My visit lasted maybe 30 minutes and it was mostly spent covering what the health visitors are there for and signposting to other organisations that can provide support when they're not there. There was a list of questions she had for me and my partner - how my pregnancy had gone so far and how my mental health is currently. What family support we had, how we planned to feed and safe sleeping. She then asked some questions in regards to safeguarding - how our childhoods were, (TW) she asked if I was aware of FGM and I assume she would have asked about domestic violence if I'd been alone. The questions were intentionally broad so a lot of it was up to myself what I wanted to disclose. There was also time at the end for any questions I had for her - I just had some questions about safe co-sleeping and breast pumps. She never once asked to nosey around, wasn't intrusive and she didn't seem to care that the place was a bit of a mess with deliveries of our baby shower gifts/Christmas gifts. So the moral of the story is don't be like me - a cleaning rampage the night before is not needed!

Can I ask, how did you know they were coming- did they call you to book an appointment? Also, how quickly after birth do they come round? Sorry! Soon to be first time mum here! ☺️ xx

I got a text the day of my 31 week midwife appointment (last Monday) with a date and rough time to expect her. But I've seen some other people have received letters in the post, might differ depending on your area. And she said to expect her next 10-14 days after birth but that a midwife would be out before that to check up on us as well. Don't worry about any questions! I'm a FTM as well and would have loved this beforehand 😅

Thanks for this, I've just had mine booked today! Did they ask to see baby's bedroom or anything like that?

Nope, she didn't ask to see anything like that. She asked about safe sleeping and I mentioned we'd bought a next to me crib but that was as far as it went

@Lauren Thank you so much! This is good to know. I’ve got my 31 week midwife appointment next week so I will ask my midwife about it then ☺️ xx

Thank you for sharing this, we’ve got ours on Monday but suffering with back pain so that saves me being on my hands and knees cleaning every single corner in 2/3 days😂
