Contraception - IUD

Hello everyone, I want to get the Copper IUD coil put in as a form of contraceptive. I’ve had it in before, and got it removed to get pregnant. When I called the GP last year they mentioned I need to be at least 6 months postpartum (which I now am). This time when I called, the nurse asked if I was breastfeeding and that because I am it increases the chance of perforation of the uterus. I mentioned my periods started and I’m weaning so she said this reduces the risk slightly but it’s still higher than if I wasn’t BF at all.. anyway the appointment is booked but I’m a bit torn whether to go ahead with it. Just wondered if anyone has had the coil put in and any issues. If there is perforation then they perform keyhole surgery immediately. All sounds a bit daunting ! Would be good to get thoughts.. thanks!

Well I had mine fitted 16th of October, just over 4 months pp and nothing was mentioned about the fact I was breastfeeding, so thankfully I've been okay🙈😅. They even offered to put it in at the hospital before I left with my baby but I wanted to wait!! Honestly though it's been the best decision ive ever made after 10 years on the pill dealing with mood changes from the hormones! Xx

I wonder if different trusts have different guidelines, mine said 3 months but didn’t mention anything about breastfeeding!

I am coming up 7 month pp and had the copper coil fitted last week! I was also advised to wait atleast 6 months due to breast feeding. I was made aware of all the ‘risks’ including perforation and wasn’t too stressed - there are just as many risks with other contraception, I.e, the pill and blot clots etc. In terms of actually having the coil put in, it was totally fine!! I know everyone is different with pain but I’d literally give it a 1/10 - couldn’t even say pain tbh, maybe ever so slight discomfort but that’s it. Hope that helps 😊
