@Taniya I think that’s quite wise tbf - maybe it’s about striking the right balance. I never even thought about the difference between tellie and iPad like with one being more engaging than the other and I’m sure you will do x
We have one for my 3 year old , she's had it since about 18 months. However she mainly only uses it when we're travelling and it's never connected to the internet when she uses it. We download things she can watch and some offline games so we have full control. And some of the games are great learning tools! We keep it out of sight most of the time and she never really asks for it. So I feel like it's a good balance at the moment but I know it could easily become addictive !!
Yes when she's older. My friend was told by a nursery that her child will be a bit behind if she doesn't use an iPad now (she's nearly 3) as it's part of the curriculum these days but it's definitely all about balance. I will make sure my child is out and about way more than being on the iPad 😊
@Cathy omd really? My stepchild has had homework on qr codes before which I thought was a bit funny but was just a ‘digital option’ and they would have ‘paper options’… idk lol I think I’m a bit ignorant to it. It never occurred to me it would be part of the curriculum tho… just out of curiosity at what age would you start introducing a screen? X
No way! QR codes? Whaaat? That's mad 🤣 I know we were all shocked when she told us that. You think you're doing your child a favour and then find that out 🙈🤣 well she does watch a bit of TV 😬 we are guilty of that but we do get out more and play and read and sing and talk to her so she gets a mix of everything. For an iPad i was originally thinking about 5 but now I'm rethinking it to 3 and just only letting her play on it in small doses. When are you thinking? 😊
@Cathy yup for her phonics! 😂 what made you rethink? And I’m hoping I won’t give my bub an iPad but she will end up watching tellie/films haha but tbf someone said that tellie could actually be worse cuz it’s less engaging for their brains so now I’m thinking about it in ways I haven’t even considered will probably think myself in circles 😂 x
I have a 2 year old and when my October baby was born, I relied on that iPad. It was a god send! It meant that I can concentrate on the baby when I needed to without having my toddler scream for me. I.e feed times, nap times etc
My older kids started having tablet time around 3.5, and now they are allowed it 4 times a week for an educational game first. It hasn't been that hard of a line honestly; they don't ask for the tablet that often because they know when they're allowed to have it, and they do other things to entertain thesmo
You might call my 6 year old an iPad kid 🤣 I don’t restrict screen time especially because he’s a very well behaved boy. I never have any issues with him, always does as told etc. he will use it to play educational games and normal games or watch Netflix. But he will also put it down in favour of playing toys/lego. It’s good for his brain and even his school has digital reading books etc. If it started affecting behaviour that’s when I’d start capping time. He has a Nintendo switch he plays too. 🤣
I have a 21 month old and a 3 month old as we don’t have an iPad. I honestly don’t feel like I’ve missed it, if I need their concentration for 5 minutes (usually with nappy changes or doing her hair!) then they use my phone. But don’t feel like we need one for any other time
@Cathy if a nursery worker said that to me id be taking my child out of that nursery. What a sad world we live in!
I want to say no but realistically it’s going to happen. But I will do my level best to make sure he’s not an ‘iPad kid’ as such I.e obsessed, can’t function without. I think it’s unrealistic to be able to attend to bubba 24/7 and someone said that an iPad is better than a tv as the kid is using their brain to navigate and play things rather than just aimlessly watching something. I’m just going to give him it only when needed and for a limited time. Hopefully I get it right!
