Contraception

I’m 1 month postpartum and thinking about what contraception to go on as I don’t want to get pregnant again yet. Previously had the implant and had to get it removed due to affecting my mental health, had the pill as a teenager but don’t trust myself to remember to take it. What’s everyone using and anyone had experience with the depo injection? TIA x

Depo was my preferred birth control before my hubby got snipped, but I'd be weary of taking it depending on how long you want to wait before having another child. The first time I was on it for two years and it took six months for my cycle to come back, even longer for it to regulate. The second time I got it (postpartum last year), I took one shot in April/May and still haven't regulated. That said, when I was on it I didn't have a cycle, which was wonderful. And it didn't affect my milk supply. It takes time to come out of your system, so even if you go on it be prepared that you'll likely need another backup method to transition from it when you're ready. 🙂

I didn’t want to go back on the pill after having my little one so we just used condoms thinking that we would want a second child in the not too distant future and this way my cycles etc would be regular. Well we got pregnant the first time we had sex without the condom 😂 after it taking 18 months when I came off the pill with my first child. I think it depends if/when you are planning to have another child. I have no experience of the injection but I think this is the method I would be most open to x

It’s a really hard one to compare as there’s pros and cons with everything. I was on the pill for over 10 years and fell pregnant the first cycle I was off it. I considered depot but there was a lot of controversy regarding it causing brain tumours with long term use💀 and as Kayleigh said, I was also advised to be prepared for it take longer to regulate. In the same boat as you looking for something but I just can’t make my mind up x

@Tosha I second this . Was on this for six years and came off it a few months and I got pregnant

The issue with the injection is some people find it takes 2 years to get pregnant after stopping it. So depending on how long you want to wait till you have another that may not be the best option. I'd say it's worth talking to a sexual health nurse they know a lot about all the types. I was on the pill for over a decade and it only took us 3 months once we started to try. We are using condoms because I'm exclusively pumping and don't wish to risk my supply.

I was on the depo shot for 3 years, the only thing it did to my body was make me not have my period. And I got off of it about a year ago to get pregnant and I’m not pregnant with twins!

I went on the depo 2 months after my daughter was born. (December 2021) Took every 3 months up until march last year (2024) to hopefully start trying for baby no.2 in summer but i didnt get my first period until November. Its great in a sense that its only every 3 months and i did try the pill when before but thats how i ended up with my daughter 🤣 because i kept forgetting to take it. But nearly coming upto a year since i my last injection and still not pregnant which is a bummer ☹️ but all depends on if/when you want another baby xx
