Dentists

Hi, my nearly four year old has never been to the dentist - it’s a massive struggle getting him to brush his teeth as he clenches his mouth shut but it eventually get done. I just know he will scream and refuse as he already does this with the hairdressers & the doctors. Does anyone have any tricks that may have helped? I don’t think there is an issue with his teeth but could do with a check just to make sure. How do they normally go around calming down an autistic child?

I think if they know he’s uncertain, they won’t even try to push him as they say it’s all about maybe them feel more comfortable! As for teeth brushing- my son likes songs and things and there are lots of tooth brushing videos on YouTube that really help!

They allow extra time slots for kids with extra needs. I’m in England. They do this at daughters dentist and her opticians 👍🏻

@Elisha Do you know what would happen if they never let the dentist check their teeth even with the extra time?

No sorry my experience with child dentists has been positive. My daughter hates, but her dentist is super patient. It could be worth finding one on particular with experience of potential reluctant children.

@Amy my son never really lets him look in his mouth! But they ask me about brushing his teeth and still said it’s about building positive experiences at this age! I try to do lots of practicing of opening his mouth which he is amazing at until we get there!! 🤣 we share appointments too so he gets to see me getting checked too!
