BF/ Combi feeding

Hi, my little boy will be 4 months next week. He's been exclusively breastfeeding but for the last couple of weeks I started to introduce formula. Unfortunately, it's so difficult I can't get him to drink it. He knew a bottle because from time to time I expressed so my partner could feed him. But I try formula twice a day and he's almost sick and hysterical, now way he'll accept it. I've managed only one by tricking him: I gave him breastfeeding and quickly switched to formula, he drank 60ml. Any tips of how to teach him formula? I'd like to give him a bottle before sleep and gradually increase so I eventually can't stop breastfeeding cause I'm starting to be fed up and too tired... thanks xx

Might be worth expressing your milk to get him used the bottle again, have you tried different bottles? Also could be the flow of milk from the teat either too fast or too slow, if he’s being sick though it maybe too fast. Has your partner tried giving him formula at all and is he the same? My LB has 1 bottle of formula in the morning but will not have it off me, he will only have expressed milk from ne but happily have it off his dad, I think that’s cause he can smell my milk but it drinking something completely different

Try a little bit of formula at a time start with 20 ml and finishing at the breast and once he’s content do 40 ml etc

Have you tried different types of formula? Might take a bit to find one he likes. I wouldn’t try to force it though as it may create a bottle aversion. As suggested, I’d try a bottle of EBM until he’s satisfied with that and then gradually add in formula, start with 3/4 breastmilk to 1/4 formula, then 1/2 1/2, etc.

I think mixing breastmilk with formula sounds like a the best idea for now, will try this if it won't work I will change a formula then. Thanks ladies x

My little girl was like this turned out she just liked the formula cold. 😆

In the early days my midwife said don’t mix breast milk with formula, if you want to give both, feed breast milk first then formula as breast milk travels faster through the body. I know it’s hard but it might be worth expressing to get them more use to the bottle then introducing formula, if they don’t like it, it might be worth changing formulas. Hope this helps.
