New to IVF - where do I start

We had our first fertility appointment this week after 18 months of trying to start our family. We have had a miscarriage, an eptopic pregnancy and then a diagnosis of unexplained infertility… it’s been a long road. So I’m brand new to IVF… I guess like most women on here, I never imagined this would be part of our joyney. So my main question is… where do I start? Any good podcasts or books, what do I need to research? I want to be well informed before I jump into everything, so any tips would be great! Also does anyone get treatment from Kings Fertility in London, any feedback? Thanks ladies!

Hey. If I'm honest I didn't do any reading etc as there is a lot of different things out there. I waited until my consultant told me the route that would be best for me and went from there. I found that whenever I went for an appointment, everything was explained to me and that has given me all the info that I needed. Obviously if you want to research etc then that's completely your choice, but just be open minded as everyone's results are different. Sending you lots of luck x

Hi Kate, sorry for your experience- hope you are holding in there. In terms of reading - it depends on what you are looking for, if you would like to hear comunity stories there are two ladies on Instagram called Amber Izzo and this is Alice rose (separate accounts) who have a informed and positive fertility dialog. Amber izzo also has a podcast

If you are looking for information on Kings’s Fertility try Fertility Mapper - it’s an independent review site with details on cost and experience.

In terms of clinical information I agree with Jo that once you speak with your consultant you should get a clear view on the process -

There are some guides on the process through if you want to learn the steps in advance

Hey! I did ivf to have my little boy. Thing that helped me most was I made myself a private fertility instagram to connect with others going through it. I made such a lovely community on there and it helped me no end to have support from people who get it xxx

Things I would say to research at the beginning are 1. Treatments and how they work. 2. Costs and funding, 3. Chat to clinics to see what they are like and test how you connect with them. 4. Find a community of people going through it/content from people on the journey good luck xx

Hey- I went through ivf my little boy is turning 1 in two weeks. I didn’t read too much into things I spoke to people with knowledge and I had fertility acupuncture and he provided me lots of information. I’m happy to answer any questions x

My only advice is to take all the advice you’ll be offered with a pinch of salt. Success is largely down to age, genetics and sheer dumb luck. Hydrate, meditate and go easy on yourself.

It depends if you're a "consume all possible information" type person or not. I really like the Big Fat Negative podcast.

Girls thank you sooo much, this already makes me feel better! I’m already learning that there is a lot of information and maybe it’s best to just listen to the consultants step by step. I’m the sort of person who needs to know at a basic level what’s happening, so I appreciate all the app and podcast recs, but I’m learning that I might overwhelm myself and it’s better to go step by step!

Hi Kate. We’ve been with King’s Fertility from the start. I’ve found them to be absolutely brilliant. We’ve always had a good experience, even in the rounds that we were unsuccessful.

I second the Big Fat Negative podcast. Best of luck 🤍

Hi Kate, It’s hard to research until you know a little more about your own treatment plan. The HFEA has tonnes of info on clinics. Every couple has a very different experience, treatment, medications, and emotional rollercoaster! Try not to compare yourself with others. Saying that, I find it helpful to connect with people that have been through a similar process/ or are going through it the same time. I’m with a satellite clinic that uses kings for egg collection and transfers, really happy with my experience off egg collection. Due to have my transfer later this month. Happy to chat if you wanted, feel free to DM me. Xxx

Hi Kate, so sorry to hear you've had a tough time. We were 5 years until our daughter arrived in May through Kings fertility. They are a very good clinic. Alex Jones did a documentary called making babies which was based at Kings fertility so that's a nice one to watch as prepares you for everything and is filmed in your clinic! In terms of advice and research we would not have had our daughter today without reading 'it starts with the egg' by Rebecca Fett. Highly recommend. Just read the Amazon reviews! You can start taking some supplements such as vitamin d etc. to help improve your egg quality prior to IVF so well worth a read. Good luck! X

Kings are amazing! Very lovely nurses and staff and the whole facility is nice. I didnt read anything but I did make an ivf insta account (private) and connect with others going through ivf. Good luck xx
