They can't turn you away but we were encouraged to train before he even entered the early pre school room at nursery. It's a lot harder to train them in those settings so anything you can do at home before hand is a massive help.

We were told we would need to come and change our son when he started nursery however that changed once they asked me to get a referral for asd. I do know schools that actively discouraged kids that wernt toilet trained however they also had sen. A boy in my daughter’s class did but he had global development delay.

I’d say yes before reception as they are 4 then? Not nursery, my girl was only 1.5 when she started there

@Karen how old was he when he started nursery??

@Rachel it was school nursery so 3.

No I don't think so

Yes some schools do require to be potty trained ik the school told me they r ok with accidents but once it hit the 4 month mark they expect to be fully trained as they r not trained to do so

I believe that some schools expect you to go and change nappies if they are still in them but this might be different in different schools im not sure ... also I feel like a child should be potty trained by then as they'll be 4/5 but no judgements I know each child is different

I think there was only one child in nappies when my daughter started school nursery at 3. Not known anyone in nappies in reception at 4, some almost 5! I do think they should be potty trained at 3/4… teachers don’t have time to be changing nappies and then being blamed for nappy rash etc… I think it’s lazy parenting tbh.. unless of a medical reason

My son is in preschool. He was trained before I sent him to nursery at 3. There’s quite a few kids in his class who are still in nappies. Some wee trained but not poo others nothing at all. The teachers change them. I hope they will be out of nappies by September, ready for school. I do agree with parents having to go in to change them at school age. I appreciate SEN kids can be different

Nursery no, school yes!

Unless there's a medical reason every child should be potty/toilet trained because they start school, nursery is like a 50/50 (school nurseries so 3) you should at least be in the stage of teaching them. We went for an open day and our toddler was still in nappies but by the time she started in the September we made sure she was fully toilet trained. It's not a teacher's job to change nappies

For my sons 3yr old kinder application there was a question whether he was day/night trained and as he was, I clicked yes. They have tiny little toilets there for them to use. If we do the orientation the summer before he starts (usually orientation day is before Xmas, just one day to meet the teachers and the kids) they expect you to utilise that 6w summer break before kinder starts to start day toilet training so they can be day trained before they start.

Yes to starting reception at 4-5 years old. The staff to child ratio cannot cope with children who aren’t toilet trained.

Our local preschool ( most children attend from 3) attached to the lower school requirements are all children should be out of nappies and in nappy pants- indicating that they are being toilet trained or a re toilet trained
