Refuses to brush teeth

Is anyone's toddler screaming like it's the end of times when they try to brush their teeth. This has suddenly happened over night and she ends up so hysterical I have to stop because she starts gagging due to being so worked up. I've tried every type of distraction but nothing is seeming to work. I'm really worried she's going to get an infected tooth if this continues

My daughter is also the same

Yes my son has always been the same it’s a nightmare

Can you offer a different toothpaste like strawberry ? The same happened to our girl she was great then hated the mint then she loved the strawberry, she’s now back to mint :) x

We brush through the tantrums. I’d much rather 2 tantrums a day than him need a mouth full of fillings etc. it’s not nice to see them upset but it is for their own good x

I have a kids vibrating brush that helps & I let him watch Trash Truck whilst I do it. Still hard, but easier. I agree with brushing through the tantrums. If they can’t stay still for this, can you imagine fillings!!!!

@Yasmin you are absolutely right they don't know what's good for them sometimes x

@Kimberley I haven't thought of this, we use a strawberry one but will try to switch to mint to see if it helps. Thank you x

@Bex we also have the electric one she'll play with it but won't actually brush her teeth or let you brush them. We used to be able to brush her teeth whilst ms Rachel was on but now that doesn't even work 😭 you are absolutely right about brush through the tantrum. I guess I will just have to persist x

We’ve had similar and I now have to pretend to brush my teeth at the same time🤣 I’ve found that if she holds my toothbrush and tries to brush my teeth, she’ll let me brush hers. The things these babies make us do!

@Hana omg i forgot to say! Im pretty savage with it now because it got silly. But i fully wrap him up in a towel like a burrito ahahahaa. So he has nowhere he can go! Tough mum! 🫣

Also to add I’ve always let my girls pick out their toothbrushes, and I let them brush my teeth if I can brush there’s or they copy me and we sing the duggie tooth brushing song, my 1 year old points to her toothbrush when we wake up and go to bed now lol 😂 strawberry toothpaste has worked but my neighbour gave me a kids toothpaste which isn’t very minty but still has a hint! Worth a go ? :) xx

Yes. So common. With my elder one (now three) i told him that like medicine, brushing our teeth isn’t a choice and kind of pinned him under my legs. He didn’t like it and we soon went back to brushing nicely in the mirror. (It was 18 months ago, he’s now a very happy child who jumps out of bed saying “let’s brush our teeth mummy!”) so I have not scarred or traumatised him.

Thank you ladies for the wonderful advice 💜🥰
