Nursey

Anyone else thinking about not returning to work after seeing nursery costs?! Nurseries are averaging £2000 even with the 15 hrs free if we want baby there 5 days a week so my husband and I can work. We don’t have any family or friend that can help us with babysitting. That would mean one of us would have to give our entire paycheck to nursery. Our rent is £2100, the other person would have to dedicate their paycheck towards rent but then that leaves us with nothing else. I don’t qualify for public benefits, but my partner does. What are some options? Should I just quit? I meant to go back April first!😬😬

Your rent is £2100? Omg where do you live

My nursery is £65 a day, which works out £1300 a month x

Due to nursery costs I've decided to go with a childminder and my little one is so happy when he goes to her. There are other kids there aswell and they all get along so nicely.. maybe look at a childminder until pre school/school age? Xx

Childminder is literally half the price of nursery.. my boy does 2 days a week (15 hours) and it £100 a month.

Definitely look at a childminder, my boy will be going 2 days a week with the 15 hours free childcare is £147 a week but if you minus the child benefit (assuming you get that) its only £47 out of our money, much cheaper than a nursery x

We also found a childminder. Recommend looking into this option also if you can. Childcare.co.uk is great x

If no family is here, get jobs and Move to Dubai, hire a nanny, a chef and a cleaner and rent all for £2100 and have nice weather 😆

Are you in London? Seems a lot of money for rent and nursery. If no family maybe move a little further out if can

We’re going down the childminder route too instead of nursery x

Remember you get help from the government and get £500 over a three month period to put towards it too

I’m going through the same problem, I live in London, pay rent and we don’t qualify for any public funds neither, please share any tips?

We get 0 help in Wales so going down the childminder route! £6 an hour so we’ll be paying £384 a month for 16 hours a week

Yup I wondered the same when I saw the nursery costs too. I looked into a childminder but I live in London and found the costs just as expensive as a nursery for my area, childminder rates were about £90 a day I think! To be honest I only want to go back to work to be able to socialise with adults and get out of the house, so even though it doesn't mean I'm financially better off, I think mentally I will be. My work have let me go back part time so I still have some days at home with bubba still

I’ve quit my job, firstly I don’t trust nurseries with all the things in the news, I also don’t want someone else raising my baby. I’d rather us struggle than miss my babies milestones. Nursery is such a rip off, it’s insane. No hate to anyone that’s putting their babies in nursery, but it’s just not for me. Hate my partners family too so no way would they be having my baby while I work x

@Justina London. Extortionate rates on everything.

@Karolina which nursery?

@Marilyn I wish!

@Aitch yes in London, moving further out will make things more difficult because our work commute will be much longer and wouldn’t be able to get to baby in time in case of emergency

@Georgia wow £6?! Even childminder would still be quite pricey in London

@Cherrelle yes I agree, even childminder is quite expensive. And you don’t want to give your baby to just any childminder so the good ones will have a higher rate. I will have to go back to my job full time unfortunately.

@Laura I wish I could do that but can’t afford to not work.

London is crazy I don’t know how it’s possible to juggle with kids. We used to live in Hertfordshire and even then we move upto Norfolk to afford to live.

Most childminders are between £6-£8 an hour.. they aren’t expensive at all I don’t think! I’m in London aswell x

My childminder Charges £7ph. We use funded hours term time, and pay her hourly rate during the school holidays. We also utilise the tax free childcare, so for every £8 the government top up £2, which we build up over time to cover for the school holidays. But finding this option at a location close to me and accessible, was reputable etc took me about 6 months of constant knocking on doors and getting recommendations, and also finding am available space for her. Keep going don't be disheartened or settle for anything that makes you uncomfortable. That was my one thing. If I feel even 1% uncomfortable about something it's a no no.

@Laura we are of the same mind set, I missed so much of may daughter's early years from going back to work full time, so just for now I'm doing a few evenings in the week to look after the kids, so no childminders and weekends are still together. It's so hard as I don't trust anyone to have them as I've heard too many horror stories x
