Wondering how accurate ultrasounds are

I went for my anatomy scan and the ultrasound tech messaured my baby boy as 2 weeks ahead and said he’s a whole pound more than he should be. She said they could’ve gotten my due date wrong but I was tracking my period so I don’t think that’s the case. Her exact words were “he’s a massive one” and now I’m even more scared for birth

I tracked my period and was off by a week. He might just be a big baby, healthy. If you’re concerned you should speak with your doctor.

Literally I just had the same exact thing happen to me. Except more like a week and a half ahead and .5 pounds more than expected. I also was tracking my period so it’s confusing!!! I wish I had an answer but I’m just as confused as you are

@Christina I’ve had two and both have been measuring ahead but they don’t want to move my due date yet cause they don’t know if he’s actually big or the due dates off I’ve just heard that ultrasounds could be unreliable

My son measured 2 weeks ahead starting at 20 weeks. He was estimated to be close to 10lbs by 40 weeks. He came out at 39 weeks 8lbs 2 oz 50th percentile on everything. Some people do just have bigger babies but ultrasounds aren't always accurate on weight and size

They aren't always that accurate. My baby was measuring a week ahead at my 37 week scan and they estimated he was going to be around 9lbs at birth. He was born at 40+3 weighting 7lb13. Just my experience but I do know other mums who have been told they are having big baby's and most were born and perfectly average weights. Hope this takes away a little of your fear.

This has been happening to literally everyone I know that’s recently had a baby and it’s infuriating. Idk what the deal is. And then they prematurely recommend they schedule c-sections. The ultrasounds are not accurate!! Both babies were 7-8 lbs…

The margin of error for ultrasounds is around 30%. I was told my baby was huge and every week got told how I needed to be induced/c-section as she was so big. I was even scanned on day of birth and told she was 11 pounds and had a large belly, when I gave birth she was 8 pounds and perfectly normal lol

Big babies are totally fine! A good doula can definitely help so much. I'm small and have had a 10 pound baby, 5th is also measuring ahead of due date. Size alone really isn't cause for extra worry, just good birth prep classes/ information

Same thing happened to me, and I had a 28 day cycle and was menstruating at my wedding, so there's no way I was wrong. The doctor was wrong and my baby was 7 pounds when she was born at 40 weeks.

Our tech mentioned that sometimes they catch babies in a growth spurt so they don’t assume baby will be big or that something is wrong because so much of it averages out in time.

I went to my anatomy scan at 21 weeks and they told me baby was big measuring a few days ahead but it don’t mean ur due date can be wrong it’s just the fact that we having big babies and it is scary when it comes to birth (it’s my first baby) cause u can get induced is what they told me or c section

But also note that all of the doctors measurements of how big they are is always correct. Just stay positive and as long as baby is healthy and growing no need to worry about something else
