Cervical stitch

I am early in my pregnancy and discovered during my scan yesterday that I need a cervical stitch. I'm so scared cause this is my first ever surgical process. Has anyone experienced the cervical stitch before?

I've heard it's the absolute worst and I've heard it's really not bad so I hope you get the latter experience

Oh thank goodness! I’ve posted about this too on the 2025 babies page, I had mine on Wednesday at 20 weeks + 1 you’re in early pregnancy so I’d say go for it as it’s riskier the further you go into pregnancy, as it can interfere with baby, I had my cervical checks and my measurements were coming back normal it was just a drastic change when I went for my 20 week scan but I’m so grateful my sonographer checked even tho I only went for a scan. The procedure isn’t v nice but it’ll save your pregnancy and you MUST REST when you get home, and do everything v v slowly. But it’ll be worth it ❤️

@Zara thank you so much, this is very assuring, thank you.

I’ve had a cervical stitch in 2 different pregnancies. One for my 3 year old and one in my current pregnancy. Both were preventive and went in at 14 weeks. The thought of the surgery is scary as you’re awake and don’t get me wrong it’s not a fun day out but you’ll be fine and the actual procedure is pretty quick! I had my current stitch 6 weeks ago and you go into theatre where they will first numb your back with some local anaesthetic (this is the worst bit!) they will then give you the spinal. You’re lower body will just start to go warm and numb and you’ll lay down. Once you’re fully numb they will pop a screen up and start the procedure, all you feel is pushing and pulling but it doesn’t hurt. They probably take 20 mins to do the actual stitch and then you’re done just back to the ward to let the anaesthetic wear off. You’ll have some light spotting or bleeding for up to a week and some period like pain but that’s all ☺️ you’ll honestly be fine! x

@Siân thank you so much, I'm currently being prepped for it now

Good luck! You’ll do great x

@Siân thank you so much I needed this! I’ve been getting period like pain what wakes me up and my anxiety just comes back, on top I’m getting new pregnancy symptoms as I’m in my second trimester I’m just constantly monitoring baby’s movements and my discharge 😭😭 I hope it gets better from here ❤️

I work in l&d this is common and will save your pregnancy.

Oh.. hope it goes well for you. At what week scan is this checked for ? And if you can share how is the assessment done? Like transvaginal or just a normal usg? I have my 20 week scan coming up.

@Zoya Hi, its done at 20 weeks and it's usually abdominal scans when they check for the full anatomy of the baby

@Zara I’m sure all will settle down soon but don’t ever feel silly about getting checked out if you’re worried! The period pain sent my nerves through the roof this time but all settled now. With my little girl the stitch went in at 14 weeks, they removed it at 36 and after the first week I couldn’t tell it was there and had a totally normal pregnancy! She came on her own at 39+4. Hoping the save again this time for me and all of you ☺️ x

@Siân aww, I know the pain get sharp sometimes and it scares me, I also wasn’t getting a wee sensation so that scared me, called maternity ward and they said to keep monitoring and thankfully it’s come back. Haha yesss it definitely feels like there’s something there as well as the baby! They said same to me about getting it removed at 36 weeks, what were you like activity wise? I’m at my mothers so I can rest plus I’ve been told to, I’m literally doing everything so slowly bc I’m too scared to move too fast haha I used to be so active. Aww I hope the same for us too, God willing! 💖

@Zara I took it easy the first week but after that I just went about as normal and had no problems so doing the same again this time other than being a bit more cautious picking up my 3y/o. Not sure if yours preventative or emergency but with mine being preventative they said there was no extra precautions I needed to take and to just go about as normal but I understand that’s not the case for every stitch! x

@Siân mine was opening so they stitched it 20 weeks + 1 but they said no washing up, no vacuum, no heavy lifting but to just relax and take it easy for now. Only the light work like tidying here and there but I’m not even doing that. I googled and it said not to sit/stand for too long and to change positions when laying down, after laying down I get up and do some steps to prevent blood clots. I just want this week to go by then I can see how I am 🥹 did you have anymore cervical checks? X
