Feeding on demand

Should we be feeding on demand if exclusively formula feeding? LO is 3 days old.

Typically it’s every 3ish hours until they regain their birth weight however we are just feeding as a when baby is hungry rather than a day schedule. He’s not back at birth weight but spent some time in nicu so is understandable. We just don’t let him go over the 5 hour mark atm and will probably increase that once he’s reached birthweight again x

I’m currently trying to feed her every 3 hours as the packaging says. She doesn’t always have the full amount and will just spit the bottle out but we’re over 36 hours now and she’s having more and more. If she’s fussing between the times I’ll just give her more and that calms her down. The most she’s had in one sitting (within the hour) was 75ml.

The packaging is a rough guide line and yes you can formula feed on demand you just have to be a bit more careful and watch out for babies cues when they don’t want more of the bottle as it’s harder for them to refuse it. Newborns don’t tend to be on a feeding schedule so they might ask for food earlier than a 3 hr period- you could always just offer less and top up as needed if they’re still hungry

I fed every 2-3 hours until she reached her birth weight again, now my midwife said to just feed when she is hungry
