Birth control and breastfeeding
Hey guys! Curious on what types of birth control has worked out for you guys with breastfeeding. I have never really consistently used birth control because I’ve always been with long term partners and we’ve just tried to use condoms. However, I am 21 and had my first about a month and two weeks ago and not looking to get a second one anytime soon. I’ve just heard about a lot of bad side effects with birth control such as gaining weight and health problems caused by birth control and now that I breastfeed im worried about supply drops too so please let me know your recommendations!

@Stella I'm not needing birth control for as long (Mirena up to 8 years, Kylenna up to 5 years) since we are planning on TTC in 4 years, so I went with the lower hormonal dose of the Kyleena.
I’ve tried lots of birth control, copper iud is my fav. No hormones so it doesn’t have side effects and doesn’t mess with milk supply
I will be getting the Mirena IUD but I haven’t used it while breastfeeding so we’ll see!

I had an IUD before I got pregnant with my baby that is now 5 weeks old. It was Mirena. I had little to no period. I might have had slight weight gain since getting it looking back, but nothing enough to make it not consider an effective form of birth control that I don't have to remember to take every day. (I think the weight gain had more to do with diet changes and drinking more regularly at the time and being late 20s early 30s than the IUD.) I am getting the Kyleena IUD next week. My OB said because it's not oral and is a relatively low hormonal amount, it shouldn't affect milk supply by any significant amount. She said the copper IUD would have zero effect on milk supply since it's hormone free but said that most women have worse periods with it which is why I didn't choose it.
