Anyone had the dilaplan rods?

Hi, looking for information on the dilaplan rods used for induction. Apparently it’s the ‘new’ NHS approach as it’s non hormonal, but I’m struggling to find much information online. Has anyone had the rods inserted and can share their experience? I’ve had them inserted and currently waiting for them to be removed and assessed. I’ve been told the second round is a choice, so keen to hear from other experiences! Thanks 💕

I've not had them yet sorry so can't help but I did find some NHS info online and should have a leaflet in your badger notes. I've had three lots of hormonal attempts at induction, just waiting to see the outcome of the third then might be trying the rods or balloon. How've you found them? X

Oh that’s interesting, I was under the impression the rods were used before anything hormonal. Having them inserted wasn’t pleasant but didn’t take long - kind of like a smear test where they open the cervix with a speculum and insert them. I was in the stirrups which was a strange experience 🤣) No pain afterwards, just slight discomfort where I’ve been stretched, but I’ve been able to get on with day to day life. Hopefully something works for you soon! X

I had them with my first baby in 2021. Had them inserted around 5pm Sunday evening and was told to come back the next morning. I was allowed home in that time - had a fairly uncomfortable night and went back the next morning on the Monday at 8am. They said because I was feeling tightenings to go back home again and come back at 5pm that day to give them longer to work. I had contractions all day, went back and once removed at 7pm ish I was about 2cms dilated. They gave me gas and air to remove them. I wasn’t offered a second round with them in. My waters were broken a few hours later and I ended up on the drip as nothing was happening. I gave birth 14:41 on the Tuesday. I actually found the rods fairly ineffective and given the option this time if I need to be induced again I’ll be asking for the hormonal gel or pessary from the off. That’s obviously just my experience though! Good luck x

Thank you for sharing your experience! I’m on the second round now, the first didn’t do enough for them to break my waters and no big changes naturally. I think I agree with them being fairly ineffective!

It's totally up to you which route you go down I think, but I know they can try give advice. I was already 1cm dilated so was hopeful the hormones would do the trick with my cervix as well as kick start contractions but not been the case yet. Aw that's a shame that it didn't work for you! I'd be prepared for a bit of a journey as I had my fourth hormonal attempt earlier on and they're sure I should hopefully be able to have my waters broken 🤞🏽 We've been in since Sunday. I've had all the hormones I can have directly on my cervix so the next try will be the rods and if they did nothing then I'm guessing it would be a section. Baby seems happy though but they wanted him out due to growing in size 😋

Aw Anna I hope something has worked for you! I had two rounds of dilapan rods and was 3cm dilated so they were able to break my waters. After that I was given the oxytocin drip, which wasn’t very successful and ended in a c section!

Aw I hope you're feeling ok and congratulations! I was very lucky in the end. They didn't have enough staff initially to break my waters after the third prostin worked to get me to 3cm! But I started contracting naturally after that and our little boy was born yesterday at 12.07pm.
