Feeding

My boy is 4 weeks now, I am breastfeeding and from yesterday he had some crying because he was hungry, not to long after he eats. It seems that my milk supply dropped or it's not enough for him to be full. So I introduced formula, but I wondered how it's possible for him from a day to another that he is not full anymore with my breast milk, because the days before everything was alright. Anyone in this situation? Thank you.

Could just be a spurt. Keep breastfeeding and latching whenever he seems hungry that’s the way your body gets the signal to produce more for him Trust your body!

Could he have been cluster feeding?

What you’re describing is called cluster feeding. It’s really normal behaviour from an EBF baby. When he feeds regular and often this is indicating to your body to produce more milk. It’s not an indication that your supply has dropped. If you continue to offer formula instead of breast, your supply will dip as you need to remove milk to make more milk if that makes sense. Happy to help if you have any questions (breastfeeding peer supporter)

Definitely cluster feeding, it usually happens in the evenings and you'll sometimes need to feed them constantly (one side, then the other, then back to the first!) It's baby putting in their order for the next day so your body produces more milk for them. It's really important to allow baby to go through this process x

@Lucie thank you for your answer. I gave him formula because I panicked that I don't have enough milk, my breasts seems very soft and empty and it was difficult to attached him, so I was thinking, oh it's empty then, he became angry because I don't have enough milk... First baby... 😁

We’ve all been there! Even if your breasts feel soft there will still be milk, remember it’s made immediately as baby latches and feeds. Try to think of them as rivers rather than buckets.. I remember some nights feeding every 20-30 mins.. it’s babies way of signalling to your body to make more milk. Sounds like baby is having a growth spurt! It’s tough but ride it out.. it will settle down again x

Supply and demand lovely, he’s amping up your supply for a growth spurt ❤️

Even if boobs are soft milk will always flow your body doesn’t run out of milk it’s always making it x ditch the formula for now until you see any concrete signs that baby needs top ups (insufficient weight gain etc) but even then you could express to boost supply/ top him up that way. Keep going your body and your baby know what to do x

I use formula as main meal and bf as snack! As I feel she doesn’t get full that quick with bf! As she clusters feeding, I rather have both options for her so she being fed! U do u!
